Records tumble on first day of the Paralympics

China ended the first day of the London Paralympics on top of the medal table but it was British cyclist Sarah Storey who stole the show by storming to her eighth Paralympic gold.

Storey took the women's C5 individual 3km pursuit after a lightning-quick qualifying time that would have won her a non-disabled title.

The 34-year-old rider's winning performance, which opened the hosts' gold account, came amid a slew of new world bests in track cycling and swimming, as China took the first gold of the Games on the first day of competition.

Storey, a five-time Paralympic swimming gold medallist who switched sports for the Beijing Games in 2008, caught Poland's Anna Harkowska with just under half of the 12-lap race to go, giving her a third cycling gold.

The British cyclist earlier clocked a new world best of 3min 32.170sec, which would have won her silver at the World Championships earlier this year and the title at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the same venue in February.

That World Cup race, a test event for the Olympic Velodrome, was won by her British compatriot Joanna Rowsell in 3min 32.364sec. Rowsell took Olympic gold earlier this month in the team pursuit.

Storey, who was born without a functioning left hand and narrowly missed out on a place in Britain's Olympic squad, said: "I always thought that if I could get off to a great start it would set up the week and hopefully that's the case.

"To get the gold medal is a dream come true."

Britain's Royal Mail later confirmed it would produce a stamp in her honour, the first time ever that a set of stamps has been issued to celebrate Paralympic winners from the host country.

China won both races in the C1-2-3 pursuit, with Zeng Sini breaking the world record in qualifying, while Germany's Tobias Graf set a new C2 best as he took bronze in the men's event.

China ended the day with 15 medals, six of which were gold, ahead of Australia with nine medals including three golds.

The Aussies were boosted by Kieran Modra and guide rider Scott McPhee, who took the men's blind and visually impaired 4km tandem pursuit, beating Modra's previous world best.

Five world records tumbled in the swimming finals, with the highlight New Zealander Sophie Pascoe, who smashed the new best she set earlier in qualifying by more than three seconds in the final of the 200m SM10 individual medley.

In the men's equivalent, Benoit Huot of Canada shaved his own previous world best down to 2min 10.01secs.

Zheng Tao, meanwhile, finally beat the record set by Russia's Igor Plotnikov way back in 2004 in the men's S6 100m backstroke, while compatriot Lu Dong took the women's race, also in world record time, as China scooped three golds.

Brazil's Daniel Dias became the fastest man ever in the S5 50m freestyle.

Sergey Punko and Oxana Savchenko made it a Russian double in both S12 400m freestyle events.

Charles Rozoy gave France its first gold in the men's S8 100m butterfly and US swimmer Jessica Long took the women's race to give her an eighth Paralympic gold over three Games.

Britain's Jonathan Fox, who lowered his own S7 100m backstroke world record to 1min 9.86secs in qualifying, went on to secure the hosts' first gold in the pool, while Hungarian powerhouse Tamas Sors took the S9 100m butterfly.

In the women's race, South Africa's Natalie du Toit won the 11th gold in her Paralympic career -- even if she was disappointed with the time.

Du Toit, a dominant force over the last decade who became the first amputee to qualify for the Olympics, swimming the 10km open water race in Beijing, plans to race in seven events and is retiring after the Games.

But she ruled out staying on in the sport until the next Games in Rio de Janeiro in four years' time.

"No I'm done. It's very official. It's sad, but I walk away knowing I gave it everything," she said.

China's Zhang Cuiping earlier shot her way to the first gold of the Games in the women's 10m air rifle, scoring 104.9 for an overall score of 500.9, while Park Seakyun, of South Korea, won the men's 10m air pistol.

And there was double delight for German twins Carmen and Ramona Brussig, who both won judo gold in the women's -48kg and -52kg categories.

Govt won't bring charges over CIA interrogations

In this undated photo released by Habib Rahman, Gul Rahman is shown. He was suspected of links to the terrorist group al-Qaida. Rahman is the only detainee known to have died in a CIA-run prison. The Justice Department announced Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, it has closed an inquiry into CIA interrogations of terrorist detainees without bringing criminal charges. (AP) ? The Justice Department announced Thursday it has ended its investigation into CIA interrogations of terrorist detainees without bringing criminal charges.

The decision in the probes of the deaths of two terrorist suspects marks the end of a wide-ranging criminal investigation by federal prosecutor John Durham into interrogation practices during the presidency of George W. Bush.

Durham has looked into the treatment of 101 detainees in U.S. custody since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Durham's probe into another episode involving the CIA began in January 2008 when the Justice Department chose him to conduct a criminal investigation into the agency's destruction of videotapes it had made of its interrogations of terrorist suspects.

In August 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder expanded Durham's mandate to include a preliminary review of the CIA's interrogation of specific detainees overseas. In June 2011, Holder approved Durham's request to move into a full criminal investigation of the two deaths.

The 2009 expansion followed the public release of an internal CIA inspector general's report that revealed agency interrogators once threatened to kill a Sept. 11 suspect's children and suggested another would be forced to watch his mother be sexually assaulted. The report said some CIA interrogators went beyond Bush administration restrictions that gave them wide latitude to use severe tactics such as waterboarding, a simulated drowning technique.

In regard to the just-completed probe of the two detainees' deaths, Holder said that "based on the fully developed factual record concerning the two deaths, the department has declined prosecution because the admissible evidence would not be sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt."

In a message to employees Thursday, CIA Director David Petraeus said that "as intelligence officers, our inclination, of course, is to look ahead to the challenges of the future rather than backwards at those of the past. Nonetheless, it was very important that we supported fully the Justice Department in its efforts" and "I would like to thank everyone who played a role" in doing so.

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said he was "heartened that the investigation is complete, and I'm heartened by the results. I had great confidence in Mr. Durham. I just regret that many CIA officers had to go through yet another review of these activities."

Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, called the outcome of the investigation "nothing short of a scandal."

"Continuing impunity threatens to undermine the universally recognized prohibition on torture and other abusive treatment," Jaffer said.

Durham's review examined whether CIA interrogators used any unauthorized interrogation techniques, and if so, whether the techniques could constitute violations of the torture statute or any other laws. The approach taken in the probe was not to prosecute anyone who acted in good faith and within the scope of the legal guidance given by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel regarding the interrogation of detainees.

Thursday's announcement came in the deaths of Gul Rahman and Manadel al-Jamadi.

Rahman died in the early hours of Nov. 20, 2002, after being shackled to a cold concrete wall in a secret CIA prison in northern Kabul, Afghanistan, known as the Salt Pit. He was suspected of links to the terrorist group al-Qaida. Rahman is the only detainee known to have died in a CIA-run prison.

Before Durham looked into Rahman's death, two other federal prosecutors conducted separate reviews and could not prove the CIA officer running the Salt Pit had intended to harm the detainee ? a point made in a government document that has been released publicly.

Al-Jamadi died in 2003 at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. A military autopsy declared al-Jamadi's death a homicide.

At Abu Ghraib prison, instead of turning al-Jamadi over to the Army, CIA officers took him to a shower stall. They put a sandbag over his head, cuffed his hands behind his back and chained his arms to a barred window. When he leaned forward, his arms stretched painfully behind and above his back.

Within an hour, he was dead.

At least three CIA employees came under scrutiny, including a paramilitary officer who ran what was known as the detainee exploitation cell at Abu Ghraib.

The officer was on the raid when a group of Navy SEALs captured al-Jamadi. He processed al-Jamadi into the prison but he was not in the shower room when al-Jamadi died.

The officer failed to have a doctor supervise al-Jamadi before he was processed into the prison, violating agency procedures. The officer, who was reprimanded over the incident, now works for a defense contractor.

Tradeo Introduces New Follow-Feature To Socialise Its Forex Trading Platfom

Screen Shot 2012-08-29 at 09.58.47Back in March eToro, the investment network that uses real-time features to let users follow and trade based on other users' activities, raised another $15 million in funding taking its war chest to $33.9 million. The online investment network now claims to have more than 2 million users across 140 countries. The investment proved that so-called 'social trading' is a hot area right now. Taking the investment model and adding Twitter/Klout-like features is proving a powerful combination, allowing investors to look to friends, acquaintances, and colleagues for trading advice. But the company has yet to properly launch in the U.S. That delay means there's opportunities for other startups to get in on the act. Tradeo, which already operates its Forex trading platform in the U.S., has now launched the new Twitter-like follow method of managing your contacts. You can now find interesting traders, follow them, and copy their trades.

Diabetes can be controlled in patients after pancreas removal

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Removing the entire pancreas in patients with cancer or precancerous cysts in part of the organ does not result in unmanageable diabetes -- as many physicians previously believed, research at Mayo Clinic in Florida has found. The study, published online August 26 in the journal HPB Surgery, evaluates how well patients who had their entire pancreas removed could control their resulting diabetes. The pancreas produces insulin to remove sugar from the blood, so when the organ is gone, insulin must be replaced, usually through an external pump or with injections.

The researchers examined control of insulin over several years in 14 patients whose entire pancreas was removed. They compared their findings with 100 people with type 1 diabetes, and must use insulin replacement. They found both groups had little difficulty controlling their blood sugar, and no complications resulted.

The findings should reassure physicians and surgeons that removing the entire pancreas is reasonably safe and effective, says senior investigator Michael B. Wallace, M.D., chair of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

"What has confounded surgery for pancreatic cancers and precancerous cysts for a long time is the notion that if the entire organ is removed, patients will have great difficulty in controlling the resulting diabetes," Dr. Wallace says. "Most surgeons try to leave as much of the pancreas as possible."

"What we have shown here is that, due to wonderful recent improvements in insulin therapy, patients without a pancreas can control their blood sugar as effectively as type 1 diabetes patients can," he says.

Although this study was small, Dr. Wallace says the findings are mirrored in the experiences of patients treated at Mayo Clinic in Florida with total pancreas removal.

Even though the approach of preserving as much of the pancreas as possible benefits most patients, leaving part of the pancreas in some patients may put them at risk of developing hard-to-detect cancer in the remaining organ, he says.

Similarly, patients who have a potentially precancerous cystic condition known as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm in part of the pancreas can develop the same cysts in the part of the pancreas that remains after partial removal, he says. Removing the entire pancreas eliminates the possibility of recurrence in the residual pancreas.

"Most surgeons today make difficult decisions about how much of the pancreas to remove in a patient, but that process may become a little more straightforward now that we have demonstrated patients do well when their entire pancreas is removed," Dr. Wallace says.

The study was funded by Mayo Clinic.

Georges St-Pierre says he?s medically cleared to fight

The UFC welterweight champion is now cleared to compete. Georges St-Pierre shared the good news on his Facebook page.

Yesterday was the final chapter of my Road to Recovery- I'm now medically cleared to compete in professional mixed martial arts! Big thanks to all my fans for the amazing support during those 9 long months of rehab- couldn't have done it without you.

St-Pierre tore his ACL while preparing for a bout with Carlos Condit. While GSP rehabbed, Condit fought Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight belt. Condit won with a tight decision. Since he was not given a chance to defend the interim belt, it turned out to be just a really shiny, kind of heavy reminder of Condit's No. 1 contender status.

The two are slated to fight at UFC 154 in Montreal. GSP's last fight was on April 30, 2011, against Jake Shields. By the time he fights on Nov. 17, St-Pierre will have had 572 days off between fights.

Will the time off affect GSP or will he pick up where he left off? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Extra pounds tied to breast cancer recurrence, death

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Among women who have been treated for breast cancer, heavier women are more likely to have their disease come back and more likely to die of cancer, according to a new study.

That could be because certain hormones that are linked to body weight may also fuel tumor growth in the most common form of the disease, known as estrogen receptor-positive cancer.

Previous studies have tied obesity to a higher chance of getting breast cancer - and worse outcomes in women who have already been diagnosed.

But these findings make the post-diagnosis picture clearer, said lead researcher Dr. Joseph Sparano, associate chairman of medical oncology at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care in the Bronx, New York.

"Obesity seemed to carry a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and death - even in women who were healthy at the time that they were diagnosed, and despite the fact that they received the best available chemotherapy and hormone therapy," he said.

Data for the new study came from trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of women with stage I, II and III breast cancer who were given standardized treatment, with drug doses adjusted based on weight.

Out of close to 5,000 women treated for cancer, about one-third were obese and another one-third were overweight.

Over the next eight years, one in four women had their cancer come back and 891 died - including 695 from breast cancer.

Sparano and his colleagues found that compared to women of normal weight, obese women were 40 percent more likely to have a breast cancer recurrence over the study period and 69 percent more likely to die from breast cancer or any other cause.

Even among overweight but not obese women, there was also a general trend toward a higher risk of recurrence and death with increasing weight, according to findings published Monday in the journal Cancer.

The link was especially strong for women with estrogen receptor positive cancer, which accounts for two-thirds of breast cancers.

But weight wasn't clearly linked to breast cancer outcomes for women with other types of cancer not dependent on estrogen for growth.

ESTROGEN, INSULIN, OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Although the new study can't prove that extra weight and fat have a direct impact on certain breast cancers, Sparano said that was "biologically plausible."

"There may be factors that are fueling the growth of the estrogen receptor positive tumors," he said - such as estrogen itself. Women carrying extra fat have been shown to make more estrogen.

In addition, Sparano added, "Insulin levels are known to be higher in patients who are obese because they develop insulin resistance... (and) insulin can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells."

Dr. Massimo Cristofanilli, head of medical oncology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, said it's possible that anti-estrogen drugs such as tamoxifen can't do enough to overcome the extra-high estrogen levels in obese women.

"Maybe obese women require much longer treatment because their risk of recurrence remains over time," Cristofanilli, who has studied the link between weight and breast cancer outcomes but wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health.

According to the NCI, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point, but the risks vary greatly over the course of a woman's life.

Whether women with the disease can improve their long-term outlook by losing weight hasn't been proven, researchers said.

"The highest priority is just getting through the chemotherapy if chemotherapy is necessary and taking their endocrine therapy," Sparano told Reuters Health.

"But for those who are obese or overweight, there may be additional benefits that one can achieve through diet and through weight reduction that may produce a reduction in the risk of recurrence that's just as significant as the reduction that they get from the standard therapies," he said.

Cristofanilli agreed on the benefits of weight loss and said "it's never too late" for women to become healthier through diet and other lifestyle changes, even after a cancer diagnosis.

PFT: Saints leaving town early to escape hurricane

Pittsburgh Steeelers v Buffalo BillsGetty Images

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger?s claim that the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium was to blame for Pittsburgh guard David DeCastro?s injury on Saturday night in Buffalo missed the mark in one important respect: Roethlisberger blamed FieldTurf, but the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium is actually called A-Turf Titan.

FieldTurf is a brand name for a type of artificial surface that many NFL teams use, either in their stadiums or on their practice fields. A-Turf Titan is a different type of artificial surface that the Bills are alone among NFL teams in using at their home fields.

According to the NFL Record and Fact Book, Roethlisberger?s Steelers are among 16 teams that play their home games on grass. The others are the Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders, Chargers, Titans, Cardinals, Panthers, Bears, Eagles, 49ers, Buccaneers and Redskins. Two other teams, the Broncos and Packers, use a blend of natural and synthetic called DD Grassmaster.

After grass, FieldTurf is the next most popular option: The Colts, Patriots, Jets, Giants, Falcons, Lions, Rams and Seahawks all use FieldTurf on their home fields.

In addition to the Bills? use of A-Turf Titan, a few other types of artificial surface are used in NFL stadiums. The Ravens and Vikings use a surface called Sportexe Momentum, the Cowboys use Sportsfield Softtop and the Saints and Bengals use UBU Speed Series-S5-M.

Roethlisberger is one of many NFL players who have expressed concerns about the safety of NFL playing surfaces, and that?s an issue that the league and the union should continue studying. But if Roethlisberger has a problem with the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium, his problem is with A-Turf Titan, not with FieldTurf.

Isaac threatens to overshadow U.S. Republican convention

TAMPA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac menaced the U.S. presidential election campaign on Sunday, forcing Republicans to make changes to their national convention in Tampa, Florida, where party officials scrambled to make sure candidate Mitt Romney's message to voters does not get blown off course.

The storm was now forecast to hit land midweek, possibly even blasting into New Orleans at hurricane strength on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina - which might hurt the party's effort to get out its message more than if it had hit Tampa Bay directly as originally predicted.

Expecting earlier that Tampa would be in Issac's sights, convention organizers had canceled Monday's opening events and tried to squeeze as many speakers and activities into three days as had been planned for four.

Republicans this week are to formally nominate Romney and vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan as their candidates to face President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in the November 6 election.

"It's a concern ... competing with a major weather event," Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said on ABC's "This Week." Still he said he expected independent voters particularly will tune in to hear Romney and Ryan speak. "I think we'll still get a fair amount of attention, and the message will be good."

"We're going to tell the Mitt Romney story, we're still going to prosecute the president on what he promised, what he delivered, and why we think we need to save this country and put Mitt Romney in the White House," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said on CNN.

The Republican convention, just like the Democrats' similar gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, early next month, is typically a celebratory event bringing together thousands of party activists from across the United States for a week of speeches, partying and strategizing.

But the Republicans, now faced with a potential natural disaster along the same Gulf Coast that saw 1,800 people killed and billions of dollars in damage from Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, will have to temper any celebrations with concern for those affected by Isaac.

The importance of the convention for Romney cannot be overstated. Running either even with Obama or slightly behind him, Romney needs a bounce in the polls from the convention.

His challenge is to convince Americans that he is a viable alternative to the incumbent Democrat, and his big week, culminating with a speech on Thursday, needs as few distractions as possible. Media focused on howling winds and storm surges in another part of the country will make his task more difficult.

He enters convention week having made a self-inflicted error by telling a crowd in Michigan "no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," a joke that rekindled a storyline from conservatives over whether Obama was actually born in the United States.

Romney tried to get the focus on what he considers the paramount issue in the campaign, the weak U.S. economy, telling Fox News he and Ryan would offer "big and bold answers."

"America needs that kind of help at a time when so many people are out of work or underemployed or having a hard time making ends meet," he said in remarks broadcast on Sunday.

Fueled by warm Gulf waters, Isaac is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds and landfall was likely to come midweek somewhere between Florida and Louisiana, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

The storm expected to be at or near hurricane force when it swept across the Florida Keys by Sunday evening, the NHC said. A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach a minimum of 74 miles per hour. At least six people were killed when it moved across Haiti.

SAFETY FIRST

Party officials were working with Florida state officials and emergency management to ensure the safety of everyone attending the convention. Although it may move ashore to the west, heavy winds and rain can stretch hundreds of miles out from the storm's center.

A Lynyrd Skynyrd concert planned for Sunday night was canceled due to the likely severe weather, although performances by Trace Adkins, Kid Rock and Journey were moving ahead as scheduled.

The Republican convention will bring 50,000 visitors to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, home to well over 4 million people. Over the last few days, local authorities have said they could handle the crowds and the approaching storm.

Many attendees booked earlier flights to be in place before any bad weather. Hotels said they were ready to shift party schedules or move outdoor events indoors.

The last Republican convention, in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2008 was also delayed a day due to a storm. That year, Hurricane Gustav hit the Louisiana coast as the convention was set to nominate Senator John McCain as the Republican nominee.

The party, still reeling from criticism of Republican President George W. Bush's handling of devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rushed to delay the meeting out of respect for Gustav's victims.

Convention president Bill Harris said the party was ready operationally for events in Tampa to begin but they were acting out of an "abundance of caution" because of the uncertainty of the weather.

"I want to make sure everyone who attends the convention is safe and everyone who lives in Florida is not unnecessarily injured by any activities taking place when a storm threatens," Harris said.

Biden, who had planned to visit Florida during the convention but who had already canceled his Tampa event because of the storm has decided to also cancel his other events in Orlando and St. Augustine.

(AP) ? On the eve of their national party conventions, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a close race to amass the requisite 270 Electoral College votes for victory. And the contest is exactly where it was at the start of the long, volatile summer: focused on seven states that are up for grabs.

Neither candidate has a significant advantage in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia, which offer a combined 85 electoral votes, according to an Associated Press analysis of public and private polls, spending on television advertising and numerous interviews with Republican and Democratic strategists in battleground states.

The analysis, which also took into account the strength of a candidate's on-the-ground organization and travel schedules, found that if the election were held today, Obama would have 19 states and the District of Columbia, offering 247 votes, solidly in his column or leaning his way, while Republican Romney would have 24 states with 206 votes.

Obama won all seven of the too-close-to-call states in 2008, and they are where the race will primarily be contested in the homestretch to the Nov. 6 election.

Ten weeks before Election Day, the AP analysis isn't meant to be predictive but rather is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that's been stubbornly close all year.

Among the unknowns that could shake up the electoral landscape before November: the latest unemployment figures that come out early next month, an unexpected foreign policy crisis in Syria or Iran and the outcome of the candidates' October debates.

Both sides are working to persuade the 23 percent of registered voters who said in an Associated Press-GfK poll that they are either undecided about the presidential race or iffy in their support for a candidate.

To woo them, the campaigns and political parties, along with allied groups with access to unlimited financial contributions, have already spent an astounding $540 million on television advertising, according to ad spending reports provided to the AP. And there's more to come.

Over the past three months, the campaign took a sharply negative turn, at times becoming nasty and personal.

Obama sought to define Romney early as a ruthless corporate raider for his time at the head of a private equity firm in Boston, and as an out-of-touch rich man keeping secrets about his wealth. Romney, in turn, worked to cast Obama as a failed president on a host of fronts, primarily the economy.

Both candidates have hit road bumps: Obama saw the unemployment rate rise to 8.3 percent and gave Republicans an opening to argue that he was unfriendly to small business. Romney had a widely panned foreign trip and made a series of potentially problematic comments, most recently joking about the debunked conspiracy theory regarding Obama's citizenship.

The national party conventions, starting with Republicans here, who convene Monday and start with a full schedule on Tuesday, and ending with Democrats the following week in Charlotte, N.C., will set the parameters of the fall campaign, and could provide each side with at least a temporary surge of support in national, if not battleground state, polls.

While Obama has a clear advantage given his incumbency, Romney does have a path to victory ? though it's a steep climb.

He must win most of the seven most competitive states ? Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia ? in order to reach the magic number. For instance, he can lose Ohio's 18 electoral votes and still become president if he wins the other six and hangs onto those already in his grasp. It's difficult to see a scenario where Romney wins without a victory in Florida, which offers 29 electoral votes.

Neither side expects a dramatically different playing field this fall.

"You know the states that are in play," said Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina. "I don't think there's going to be a surprise."

Romney's political director Rich Beeson makes the same point: "I don't think you're going to see the map go crazy."

Still, once their conventions are over, both campaigns will commission polls in the hardest-fought states to determine whether to shift their strategies. The candidates and their allied outside groups will pull money and manpower from states that are moving out of reach while relocating it to others they may now think they have a shot at winning.

"We're in a holding pattern," said Charlie Black, a veteran Republican campaign strategist and informal adviser to Romney.

Perhaps not for long.

With a huge cash advantage, Romney is considering trying to put more states in play ? and creating more state-by-state paths to reach 270. He's closely watching to see whether it's worth it to compete aggressively in Wisconsin, now that native son Rep. Paul Ryan is on the ticket.

The Republican National Committee and GOP allies have been advertising in the state in hopes of making it competitive; at least one poll shows they've had some success and the race appears close. Obama, who has a formidable campaign on the ground that includes the state's active labor and minority blocs, hasn't advertised there but might be forced to do so.

Romney also is eyeing a deeper investment in Michigan, where he campaigned Friday, and Pennsylvania, where Ryan was last week. Obama carried both states in 2008, but the GOP sees promise in the economically struggling northern industrial states, especially among working-class, white voters.

The Republican may have the money to expand the map.

August financial reports show that Romney's overall fundraising apparatus ? his campaign, the RNC and a separate joint-fundraising committee ? had roughly $177 million in the bank at the end of July. The reports are the most recent public data.

And to a greater degree than Obama, Romney also has amassed an untapped stockpile of general election money that he plans to use this fall. He can begin spending it immediately upon accepting the nomination for president at the convention's close Thursday night.

Obama and his comparable committees, in turn, had only about $127 million on hand, according to the most recent report.

He also must wait until he accepts his party's nomination on Sept. 6, the close of the Democratic convention, to start spending his general election money.

Unlike Romney, Obama isn't focused on expanding the map in earnest.

He's mostly looking to hang onto as many of the states he won four years ago, with Ohio being of particular focus. In recent months, Obama's standing there has strengthened, the unemployment rate has dropped and last week General Motors announced a $200 million expansion of a northeast Ohio plant to continue building the Chevrolet Cruze there.

Beyond playing defense, Obama's team is watching to see whether the political terrain becomes more favorable to him in Missouri in the aftermath of controversial abortion and rape comments by Rep. Todd Akin, a GOP Senate candidate.

The backlash has been fierce, and polls show Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill ? arguably the most vulnerable Senate Democrat ? having gained ground. Obama competed for Missouri four years ago but lost and hasn't run ads there this year. Romney has had a comfortable advantage there.

If they have the money to do it, both sides will engage in head-faking: spending money in places simply to force the other side to defend their home turf. For example, if Romney goes after Pennsylvania, which has voted Democratic in all recent presidential elections, Obama would likely have to spend money to defend it, limiting the amount of cash he'll have available to spend in more competitive states, like Florida or Virginia.

Internet hosting Program ? Different types of Website hosting ...

Online web hosting providers are ample amounts to settle on from and lots of manufacturers competing with each and every other to achieve success inside their place of fascination. From the consumer or customer?s viewpoint, it?s very crucial to understand your provider prerequisite to start with. A hasty determination by having a low-cost word wide web web hosting will demonstrate pricey over the long haul. One of the most valuable piece of your respective determination needs to be what sort of word wide web blog you wish varies according to the exercise you?re executing along with the goal viewers as well as their exercise as part of your world-wide-web resource site. It might not be demanded for somebody to select a focused web hosting or business web hosting services. So, the perfect word wide web internet hosting for this sort of human being could possibly be a free of cost web hosting services or low cost web hosting expert services along the lines of shared web hosting or reseller web hosting program.

At the time you find the completely free web hosting, undeniably you might be in the beneficial aspect as you are becoming it free of charge of fee therefore you are getting with no investing in addition to the worst section of it will be which the webpage appearing whole lot of ads and then the current ambiance relating to the internet internet websites, so many visitors don?t favor an appearing include in dread of hackers or virus assaults. So, it is actually prudent to make sure that that the web-site is not really confused with undesirable adverts. The next less expensive alternative is reseller solution; where exactly you can easlily shell out just a little to some intermediary that has taken an internet hosting house from anyone else, though the worst aspect of it might be that you just do not know who the events are and what?s their track record and aims.

There are actually a good number of other methods for bargain internet hosting similar to availability of cPanel or user interface, endless bandwidth for issues 100 percent free obtain, unrestricted disk area, dependability in the host and safety, and many others. Most of these details are highly relevant therefore you must assure you get all of these in moderately satisfactory levels despite the fact that lower priced. Nearly all small businesses use a webpage lately and as a consequence need to have online web hosting. Which internet hosting to decide on can be an key resolution, nevertheless, with not all organisation webpages necessitating precisely the same style of internet hosting. This text seems for the variety of web hosting that will be ideal for new, increasing, modest and enormous enterprises likewise as e-commerce web sites.

At any time you are starting up a fresh business venture you will be questioning if stating off with less expensive web hosting is sensible. This can be a horny opportunity while you are not likely to possess a massive turnover in the first place. This is not automatically a nasty plan, even if you should not go as small spending plan as f-r-e-e internet hosting. Totally free internet hosting is generally exceptionally constrained as well as in most scenarios you will not even give you the chance to select your very own domain identify but can have a subdomain for the internet hosting organisation. Comparatively low-priced shared web hosting may well be acceptable to start with although. Site visitors ranges for the homepage tends to be small during the earlier levels of the enterprise so it might be smart to avoid wasting on internet hosting prices though doable. It?s important, however, to improve internet hosting when essential.

For rising organizations deciding upon internet hosting might possibly be challenging as forecasting the precise quantity of development isn?t really simple and easy. Chances are you may be pondering if focused web hosting can be described as solid choice when you should have the on hand bandwidth if site traffic raises considerably. Despite the fact that this is not always a foul pick, if website visitors won?t enhance approximately you assume you can be spending for capability that you?re not achieving. Cloud web hosting could be the best choice. With cloud internet hosting you merely shell out for that web hosting source you?re utilising at any unique time. Scalability is probably the important added benefits of cloud internet hosting; when site traffic is decreased you won?t be spending for additional capability despite the fact that it?s always however on hand will ideally you have to have it. When it is really necessary the extra source is immediately committed to your web site so you fork out appropriately.

They are simply sometimes a lot more high priced than shared web hosting, but I have found some from the $15-20 for every calendar month selection and that?s just a minimal further than most shared web hosting programs. One other downside is the fact you might be accountable for organising the VPS all by yourself, however some web hosting agencies can perform this available for you now also. Just hunt for a Managed VPS or possibly a Pre-Built VPS. Managed VPSs expenses a tiny bit a bit more however you is totally sure that all the things is ready up accurately and securely. With economical virtual personal servers readily available, I seldom use shared internet hosting any even more. Once your Rails homepage should be internet based 24/7, the serenity finding out that the VPS has handle above it is possess means should help you relaxation straightforward.

Legal Intro

excellent - Lots of people mistakenly believe that estate planning only necessitates the writing of your will. Estate planning, however, also can involve financial, tax, medical and business planning. A will is part of the planning process, but you will require other documents too to totally address your estate planning needs.

In addition, there are lots of issues to take into account in creating an estate plan. First of all, consider these questions: What exactly are my assets and what's their approximate value? Whom will i desire to receive those assets-and when? Who should manage those assets easily cannot-either inside my lifetime or after my death? Who ought to be accountable for taking care of my minor children if I become unable to take care of them myself? Who should make decisions on my small behalf concerning my care and welfare basically become struggling to look after myself? What can I'd like done with my remains once i die and where would I want them buried, scattered or otherwise not laid to rest? Thus, through proper estate planning, it is possible to determine: How and also by whom your assets will be managed for your leisure during your lifetime if you happen to become not able to manage them yourself.. When and under what circumstances it's wise to distribute your assets in your lifetime. How and also to whom your assets is going to be distributed after your death. How and by whom your personal care is going to be managed and the way healthcare decisions is going to be made during your lifetime should you become not able to care for yourself.

Elder Law: Abuse Or Neglect

professional - Elder abuse is definitely an intentional act (abuse) or even a not enough knowledge/ability to supply choose to an adult person (neglect). Elder abuse can happen in many different ways that include assaultive acts, neglect, financial exploitation and/or psychological or emotional mistreatment. An elderly individual is thought as someone who is age 65 or older.

Assault includes causing pain and/or injury by molesting, slapping, bruising, forced sex, cutting, burning, restraining.

Senior Legal Assistance: Estate Planning

An income Trust will help insure that your assets will probably be managed in accordance with your wishes-even if you become unable to manage them yourself.

In creating your living trust, you might work as its trustee initially or else you may choose somebody else to take action. It is possible to name a trustee to adopt on the trust's management for your leisure if you ever become unable or unwilling to handle it yourself. And also at your death, the trustee-similar to the executor of a will-would then gather your assets, pay any debts, claims and taxes, and distribute your assets in accordance with your instructions. Unlike a will, however, this can be done without court supervision or approval.

However, not everybody needs a living trust. Young married people without significant assets and without children, who want to leave their assets to each other once the first one dies do not need an income trust and would not take advantage of having a living trust. Other persons that do not have significant assets and have very simple estate plans also do not need a living trust. Finally, anybody who wants court supervision within the administration of their estate should not possess a living trust. The higher the value of your assets (particularly if own real-estate), the greater the requirement for a full time income trust. Having an income trust might be important in the event of the accident or sudden illness.

Guardianship Or Caregiver Agreements

affordable - Conservatorship can be a legal term talking about someone who continues to be deemed gravely disabled through the court and not able to meet their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. There are 2 forms of conservatorships: Lanterman Petris-Short (Lanterman Petris Short act of 1967, referred to as LPS) and Probate conservatorships. They're governed from the state's individual laws. In California, they're governed by the California Probate Code, and Welfare and Institutions Codes. Some states or jurisdictions think of it as a guardianship, or perhaps a trustee, instead of a conservator.

Conservatorships are generally put in place for severely mentally ill those who are gravely disabled, elderly people with Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease who lack mental capacity, or individuals with developmental disabilities who might or might not lack mental capacity. Mental capacity has to be based on a medical physician or a psychiatrist experienced in the area and is also documented and presented to a legal court as evidence.

A limited conservatorship usually refers to individuals who are developmentally disabled, and so they can retain with additional control over their personal affairs than other conservatees if they're capable. For instance, they might retain their right to decide where they could live.

Legal

Having a basic knowledge of the above-described processes, along with the appropriate documents and notes at your fingertips, will aid you when you talk with either an estate planning specialist or elder law specialist. It also brings out you one step nearer to resolving any legal issues you may have - which often will minimize your dependence on attorneys. Perhaps, it'll even minimize family strife.

Missouri woes are latest for GOP in Senate quest

(AP) ? It's not just Todd Akin. The fallout from the Missouri Senate candidate's "legitimate rape" comment was the latest signal that the Republican path to the majority in the Senate may have just gotten tougher.

Democratic prospects have improved in states where Republicans had long been favored, like North Dakota and Arizona. And Republicans also now face the possibility of losing a seat in Maine.

The GOP argues that it still has a strong path to power, given improved prospects in states like Wisconsin, Nevada and Connecticut.

On Capitol Hill, Republicans are expected to keep control of the House and need to gain four seats claim the Senate majority? or three if Mitt Romney is elected, making Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan the tie-breaking vote.

Which party controls the Senate has vast influence over the future of major policies, such as President Barack Obama's health care law and the tax code, as well as the makeup of the Supreme Court. Four of nine current justices are over the age of 70.

If Republicans win control of the Senate and hang onto the House majority, a second-term Obama would find it difficult to pass any major legislation without great compromise. On the other hand, if Republican Mitt Romney wins and the GOP controls Congress, Romney could have an easy time pushing through his agenda to repeal Obama's health care overhaul and Wall Street regulations.

Multiple factors appeared to be working in Republicans' favor as this campaign cycle began. One-third of the Senate is up for grabs every other year, and this year, Democrats have 21 seats to defend, while Republicans have just 10. A still-sluggish economy, high unemployment and a Democratic president with an approval rating under 50 percent offered the GOP reasons for optimism.

But the Senate terrain now looks less dreary for Democrats.

The latest blow for Republicans came Sunday.

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, widely regarded as the most vulnerable Democrat up for re-election this year, watched her opponent, Rep. Akin, start to implode when he said in an interview that women's bodies can shut down pregnancies in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Although Akin repeatedly apologized, top Republicans demanded he drop out and vowed to deprive him of funds should he stay in the race, as Akin has vowed to do.

That episode came six months after the surprise retirement announcement from Sen. Olympia Snowe, a popular Republican in left-leaning Maine. It created a major opening for Democrats, who were favored to pick up the seat until Angus King, the state's independent former governor, entered the race. Although King has refused to say which party he will caucus with if he wins the seat, both parties expect him to cast his lot with Democrats, making it a loss for Republicans.

In other states, the GOP shifts in fortune have been more subtle.

Democrats are playing defense in North Dakota, where Sen. Kent Conrad is retiring.

The state's other Senate seat and sole House seat both flipped from Democratic to Republican in 2010, and conservatives have been bullish about GOP Rep. Rick Berg's prospects for completing the clean sweep. But even Republicans acknowledge the race has become more competitive, with the GOP outside group Crossroads spending more than $700,000 on ads hitting Democrat Heidi Heitkamp, a huge amount in a state where advertising is relatively cheap.

Heitkamp, a former state attorney general, has eschewed her party's label by criticizing Obama whenever opportunities present ? on domestic energy, for instance, a hot issue in North Dakota. Berg has relentlessly pinned Heitkamp to Obama and his health care law, both of which are unpopular there and which Heitkamp praised before launching her campaign.

In Arizona, Republican Rep. Jeff Flake was expected to coast to a seat left open by the retiring Sen. Jon Kyl. But real estate mogul Wil Cardon has pummeled Flake on the airwaves, spending $6 million of his own money on mostly negative TV ads.

Flake still is the heavy favorite in Tuesday's primary. But if he wins, he'll enter the general election with just $1.7 million in the bank, slightly less than Democrat Richard Carmona. A former U.S. surgeon general and son of Puerto Rican immigrants, Carmona has Democrats enthused over his perceived appeal to independents and the state's growing Hispanic population.

"There's far too much extreme, vitriolic attacks," Carmona said on Friday, "and I think the public is tired of that."

Republicans have seen their prospects brighten elsewhere in recent months. And they say they're nimble enough to redirect their resources to achieve maximum effect.

"Missouri is clearly a setback if Congressman Akin chooses to remain in the race," said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brian Walsh. "On the flip side, Republicans still have a number of great opportunities to win back seats in other states across the country."

Wisconsin Republicans have their most viable general-election candidate in former Gov. Tommy Thompson, who edged out three conservatives with closer ties to the tea party in a hard-fought August primary. A CBS-New York Times poll released Thursday showed Thompson 6 points ahead of Rep. Tammy Baldwin, one of the House's most consistent liberals. And GOP enthusiasm may be higher in Wisconsin now that Romney has tapped Ryan, one of the state's congressmen, as his running mate.

To the west, Nevada Rep. Shelley Berkley, the state's Democratic Senate nominee, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. For Berkley, it's an inopportune time for the panel to be examining whether she used her position to benefit her family's financial interests. Berkley has said there was no conflict of interest.

Republicans are also eyeing opportunities in Connecticut, where former wrestling executive Linda McMahon is making a second go at a seat after losing in 2010, and in Florida and Virginia. Those two presidential battlegrounds have competitive Senate races likely to be overshadowed by the deluge of spending by Romney and Obama.

Movie review: And If We All Lived Together | canada.com

Movie review: And If We All Lived Together

By Katherine Monk

Starring: Jane Fonda, Guy Bedos, Geraldine Chaplin, Claude Rich, Pierre Richard

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

(In French with English subtitles)

Damn those French people and their fabulously rustic picnic tables. Surely, you?ve noticed them, those long elegant planks cobbled together with ancient dowels, stained by the finest balsamics and Bordeaux?

They sit centre-frame in every major scene because French people apparently still believe in the idea of sitting down and sharing food, talking about the metaphysical challenges of being and generally contemplating one?s raison d?etre.

American filmmakers rarely show us the dining room table unless it?s done with the suggestion of ironic conformity ? where prim and proper parents look down on the soup-slurping interloper with judgment and disdain.

Actually, we rarely see Americans eat at all anymore, unless it?s a prelude to a gangland slaying where spaghetti flies about the room in slow motion alongside the blasted contents of anonymous craniums.

Yet, eating is very much at the core of this Gallic take on a Marigold Hotel, and those gorgeous dining room tables have a significant supporting role as a ragtag group of golden agers decide the only way to deal with the rising cost of elder care is to move in together.

Imagine Three?s Company and Golden Girls inhabited by the lusty spirit of Serge Gainsbourg and you get a pretty good taste of what And If We All Lived Together serves up for entertainment.

You can rest assured we?re going to feast on farce when the gang orders a 100-kilo side of beef without proper storage. You can also bet on a few gnarly barbs when the ghost of infidelity sits down and reveals all to a demented partner.

Yet, beneath the comic checkered tablecloth lurks the lump of mortality: Every character is facing the end. Some sooner. Some later.

The one facing it soonest is Jeanne, played here by former ?fille terrible? Jane Fonda. Jeanne has already made peace with death when the movie begins: she goes coffin shopping, eager to find just the right box that will please her friends when they say goodbye.

She thinks it should be jolly, because Jeanne is the only one in the whole movie who?s grasped the importance of living in the moment. She wants her final farewell to be memorable and happy, because she loved a good life, and she also ? in perfect French fashion ? lived with good love-making.

Yes, dinner conversation is filled with talk of sex and indiscretion, and when the long-veiled truth comes out, we expect to hear the rattle of manly swords beating against the aged wood.

Yet, for all the venom and anger, there?s a palpable softening of the spleen. The men would rather hug each other over a bottle of good wine than get all bruised and bloody defending their honour.

Even the other surviving female, Annie (Geraldine Chaplin), retracts her claws when she learns she was sharing her lover with her best friend.

Everyone is just too old for the self-indulgent drama, and they know it. So while it?s nice to be spared the irksome ego sparring, the result is a movie where the bulk of character transformation has already taken place.

We?re not going to see any great arcs, but director-writer Stephane Robelin finds a suitable substitute in the glimmer of self-knowledge that flashes across the face of each and every person on screen.

Whether we?re watching an old man discover who he became over the course of his life, or a young man explore his own fear, Robelin ensures there?s enough internal drama unwinding in each actor to keep the frame busy.

The inter-connections are tougher to pull off because the situation never feels entirely believable. Every scrap of dialogue feels forced and syrupy, unless it?s a word exchanged over the humble grain of a rough-hewn picnic table.

The dinner scenes are the glue that hold this movie together, and the table itself the sexist ingenue on all fours. Sadly, Robelin can?t cook up a gourmet meal with the given ingredients and settles for a microwaved sit-com served in a stylish terrine.

Walker County football coach flagged by religious group

by Matt Ledger Cat Walk Chatt

A Wisconsin-based group has filed a complaint against a Walker County football coach for violating separation of church and state.

Freedom From Religion Foundation says coach Mark Mariakis has, among other wrongs, allowed churches to prepare meals for his players. The complaint alleges, for example, that Solid Rock Baptist Church in Flintstone held a dinner in which a church leader ?preached? to the team.

There are other, equally serious, violations, said Andrew Seidel with the foundation, which consists of ?atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, heretics and nonbelievers,? according to its website.

Seidel, an atheist, said there are allegations that Mariakis, who participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, prayed with his team, used Bible verses in motivational speeches and on team shirts, and held Christian football camps during summer break.

?I do have reservations about (Mariakis?) ability to keep his religion out of his job,? Seidel said. ?He seems to be very proud that he mixes football and God, which would be fine if he were at a private Christian school. But as a public high school coach, that?s unconstitutional.?

Seidel said the foundation filed the complaint Tuesday, Aug. 21, with Walker County school administrators. The complaint originated in late July from someone involved with Ridgeland High?s football program, he said.

Seidel declined to say who filed the initial complaint, in order to protect the person from possible retributions from the public.

Walker County school superintendent Damon Raines said school officials are reviewing the complaint.

?Our first step is to look at the allegations and then begin to look into it in the manner of which we should,? Raines said. ?We are getting more information that gives us plenty to review and then we will work through the process.?

Seidel posed a scenario in which coach Mariakis is Moslem, taking the players to a mosque for team dinners. He said that, in such a situation, there would be significant public outcry against the coach.

Regarding the summer camps, Seidel said, ?You are pressured to go to that (Christian football) camp if you want to play. You are looked down upon if you don?t go to that camp.?

?Playing time should strictly be based on merit, not on religious conviction,? he said.

He said the foundation is seeking ?immediate action to stop any and all violations of the First Amendment.?

?The purpose is to protect the constitutional principle of separation between church and state,? Seidel wrote in the complaint.

At the crux of the complaint is the First Amendment violation that occurs when faculty members inject religion into their professional roles as an educator or even as a coach, Seidel said. The foundation isn?t seeking to stop students from practicing their religion, only to end the perceived pushing of a particular religion by an employee, he said.

?We?re not trying to cause this school district financial ruin,? Seidel said. ?We just want the Constitution to be followed and we think that everybody should want that.?

All policies regarding prayer are set locally, not by the Georgia Department of Education, according to Matt Cardoza, director of communications at GDOE.
