(AP) ? When Bob Stoops starts to rattle off the scores of the big wins he's brought home for Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, they all start to sound alike ? and oh, that's so sweet for the Sooners.

Damien Williams broke off a 95-yard touchdown run for the longest rush in the rivalry's history, Blake Bell powered his way in for four TDs and No. 13 Oklahoma beat No. 15 Texas 63-21 Saturday for its second straight blowout in the series.

Stoops is now 9-5 against Mack Brown and responsible for three of Oklahoma's five most lopsided wins over Texas ? and that doesn't include last year's 55-17 clobbering.

Put this one right up there with 65-13 in 2003 and 63-14 in 2000, both seasons when the Sooners played for the national championship.

"It's in the same ballpark," Stoops said, trying to rank his glut of triumphs against Texas. "If we'd have left our (starting) defense out there, I don't think the end would have been like it was. It would have been right there with those.

"Those are pretty special ones, and this definitely is right there with them."

Landry Jones threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns and for the third straight time got to slap on his head the Golden Hat trophy that goes to the winner. He entered rare territory, breaking Steve Davis' record for wins at the school and becoming just the fourth Sooners QB to beat Texas three times.

"Just the game of football is great, but this game in particular, there's something about it," Jones said.

"There's something about the atmosphere ? the crimson versus the burnt orange and just this rivalry. There's something special about it. I've just been so thankful that I've been able to play in this game."

The Longhorns (3-2, 1-2 Big 12) couldn't get a stop and never got their offense going, then lost quarterback David Ash to an apparent left wrist injury when they were trailing 49-8 in the fourth quarter.

Ash grasped at his left hand after getting hit by Oklahoma's Chuka Ndulue after he'd released what turned out to be his final pass attempt of the game. He headed to the locker room, pointing to the sky with his right hand and a towel over his bruised and swollen left wrist.

"It's just unacceptable for Texas to lose like that to Oklahoma, much less anybody, and especially two years in a row," Brown said.

"I'm disappointed for our coaches, our fans and our players because that's not who we are."

Case McCoy relieved Ash and threw late touchdown passes to Mike Davis and John Harris against the Sooners' backups. Carrington Byndom returned an interception for a touchdown just after halftime, but it didn't create a spark for the Longhorns.

Defensive tackle Casey Walker weaved through players to plant an OU flag at midfield, punctuating a day when Oklahoma amassed a 677-289 advantage in total yardage and ran for 343 yards.

A Texas defense that had high expectations at the start of the season has now given up 1,186 yards rushing in the past five weeks, with back-to-back losses that could knock them out of the Big 12 race.

"We couldn't stop the run. When you can't stop the run, things get ugly real quick," said Alex Okafor, the Longhorns' defensive end and NFL prospect. "It's been like that all season. We've got to find a way to stop it."

Fullback Trey Millard had a career-best 119 yards receiving, including a 73-yard catch that was one of two early back-breaking plays by the Sooners (4-1, 2-1 Big 12).

After Texas' second of four straight three-and-outs to start the game, Williams zipped through a hole on the right side of the line and got a smashing block from receiver Kenny Stills against Quandre Diggs to clear the way for the longest run in the rivalry's 107 games.

Millard then went hurdling over safety Mykkele Thompson to turn a short pass into a 73-yard gain and set up Bell's third score to make it 27-2.

The Longhorns were being outgained 314 yards to 14 at that point.

All that kept Texas from a completely inept first half was a botched extra-point snap by the Sooners after their first touchdown, allowing Chris Whaley to block Michael Hunnicutt's kick and Diggs to return it for a 2-point conversion.

Even when there was a tiny glimmer of hope for the Longhorns, Oklahoma quickly snuffed it out.

Davis provided the first Texas first down with a leaping 31-yard catch along the sideline, getting up and pumping his arms to try to get his teammates fired up. But on the very next play, Ash tried to go deep again and Aaron Colvin picked off his pass.

The Sooners didn't score on that drive, but Justin Brown downed Tress Way's punt at the 1-yard line and a horde of Oklahoma players converged to take down Joe Bergeron for a safety on the next play. Williams ran right through the Longhorns to set up Bell's fourth touchdown run ? a 1-yarder that had him backing his way in for a 36-2 advantage.

It was a dominating performance from a Sooners squad that looked ordinary at best three weeks earlier in a home loss to Kansas State that featured three turnovers, including two critical ones by Jones.

"I think we're just cutting it loose. Whatever happens, happens," Jones said. "We're having fun out there. On the sideline, there's so much more energy."

And there was nothing Texas could do to stop it. Bell converted a fourth-and-1 to keep the first drive going, then scored on an 8-yard run in the "Belldozer" short-yardage package. He'd add three 1-yard TD runs, and Jones threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Millard and a 14-yarder to Justin Brown.

"It's going to make the bus ride relaxing. Guys are going to be laughing and joking for three hours," defensive end David King said. "Probably the best part is you see those UT buses going by.

"I know how they're feeling. It's so much better being on this side of things."

Marine Garrett Anderson Explains How Fallujah Made Him Fear ...

It was early, a good friend was calling and the phone was ringing.

I hate the phone; anyone who knows me, knows this. It is a strange irrationality of mine, but my level of discomfort turns to panic as each ring passes.

Sometimes I flip a switch inside and pick it up, other times step outside myself, watch it play through to the end ? then take a moment to recover.

I hate the phone because I was a platoon radio operator during the battle of Fallujah, when I was nineteen, and every time somebody called me out there it was a serious fucking emergency.

I had to monitor the net (field communication network) for unit reports on friendly movement so that my platoon did not walk into another?s gun fire.

One time I had told a tank that it would be clear to fire on a building, shortly after I watched a dozen Marines from another platoon take cover behind the same building, out of sight of the tank. The tank?s turret shifted and pointed toward the building.

When there are too many people talking on a radio channel, the net gets tied up and I have to wait for a person to stop talking before I can talk to them. I frantically held down the button to my handset repeating over and over, more panicked and more panicked, ?Cease fire, cease fire, cease fire!? When I let go of the button I could hear the tank power down with a sound like a vacuum cleaner and my handset answered back, ?Roger, cease fire.??

Other times I would need the radio to call for a medical evacuation of friends who had been shot or killed or hit by explosives.

Most days my ear was stuck to my handset for eighteen hours and nothing special but during the times that nothing happened a person could not help but to wonder what the next horrible phone call might be.

When I turn my knob to our battalion channel sometimes the breaking news of the day is a friend from another company has just been killed; or I am sleepy on hour seventeen but keep nodding to the sound of empty radio static that makes a noise like television snow while filled with a cold panic that if I go to sleep, my friends would die because of me.

Sometimes my friend Nate Douglass would call my apartment late at night and I would not pick up. I would want to cry for fear, but did not feel well enough to help someone who needed real help. I would take a moment to recover and carry on with the endless web surfing. He just wanted to talk, so did I, but war is a bitch and we both know it.?

One time I picked up the phone for a number I did not recognize and it was Luis Munoz, our old point man.

He had moved back to Mexico after the service and was calling to tell me about the violence he was witnessing, he said it was worse than Fallujah and he had a child to raise. He had been shot through the leg in Fallujah so bad that he was told he would never walk again.

When we reunited Luis was in physical therapy walking with a cane in his early twenties, by the time he was discharged from the Marines as a wounded warrior he was jogging.

Rich Casares had been hit by an enemy hand grenade in Fallujah, which had damaged one of his eyes. The doctors put an air bubble behind it; I had to write him because he was in a Texas Prison, when he wrote me he would ask for a picture of Fallujah that looked really good so he could have it tattooed across his back.

Paul Johnson has a kid and soon will Donald Blais, they live in Connecticut today and during the battle rushed into a burning house to ferry the bodies of their wounded friends, without being ordered to.

One early morning in my dark apartment I picked up the phone for Nate Douglass who had also been hit by an enemy hand grenade.

We had been best friends in Fallujah.

We talked about our struggles coming home and then we talked about the day he'd been hit by the hand grenade. He would reference the morning and I would retort with my perspective of the same thing.

When we got to the operation he would talk about what he saw inside a house while I would tell him what I saw outside of that house. I realized that the story flowed naturally and that if I had the other members of our platoon who were there that day I was sure that they could reconstruct the story with even more depth.

I told Douglass that night that I had an idea for a documentary that would tell a story of real life heroism and struggle that might answer questions for outsiders and those just returning from their story.

French upset by lenient sentences in rape trial

PARIS (AP) ? Lenient sentences and acquittals for 14 men accused of gang raping two teenage girls are causing a stir in France, where women's organizations decry what they call a culture of impunity and even politicians from the governing party have expressed shock at the ruling. The prosecutor's office said Friday it would appeal.

On Thursday, a court in Creteil convicted four of the men of repeatedly gang raping one of the girls in a tough neighborhood outside Paris more than 10 years ago. The 10 others were acquitted, including all those accused of raping the second girl.

Most of the prison time handed out was suspended. The longest term was for five years, four of which were suspended. The lightest term was for three years, all suspended.

Clothilde Lepetit, a lawyer for the victims, called the verdict a "slap in the face," according to the Sipa news agency. The victim whose accusations led to convictions told French television she thought the verdict was a joke and that she had been living a nightmare since it was handed down. Neither victim has been identified by her real name.

The prosecutor's office for the Paris region said Friday it would appeal all four sentences and four of the acquittals, Sipa reported.

But that has not stopped outrage from many quarters, including from more than 30 women's organizations, which have started a petition online demanding a government response, including stronger laws to protect women.

"This verdict is catastrophic," the petition on www.change.org says. "It seems to say to victims, bringing charges is worthless, and to rapists, you will not be condemned or barely!"

The petition, which has gathered more than 2,400 signatures, laments a France in which few victims report their rapes, even fewer get convictions and where a woman who does come forward is immediately shamed and discredited.

While the petition is calling for better laws to fight violence against women, it recalls a debate earlier this year over rampant sexual harassment in France, where catcalling in the streets in considered a sign of appreciation and off-color remarks are common in the workplace. A new law now makes sexual harassment a crime punishable by jail time after the old one was struck down for being too vague.

Government ministers also expressed surprise and disappointment at the ruling.

"This affair won't encourage ... victims to come forward," Health Minister Marisol Touraine said on French radio France Inter.

Before the prosecutor's office announced it would appeal, Justice Minister Christiane Taubira said she was dismayed by the verdict. This decision is "unacceptable from an ethical point of view and for the integrity of the victims," she told Europe-1 radio.

Internet Business Marketing Methods | Global News

Internet Business Marketing Methods photoThe internet is a great place for people to start the business of their dreams. Online businesses are cheaper to run than standard retail businesses because operating methods are generally low-cost, and internet businesses have very little overhead expenses. Internet business can contain a great deal of products and information without the expense necessary for standard businesses. An internet business can be operated at home, and marketing an internet business has many low-cost options and methods not afforded to regular business owners.

Marketing methods are numerous, but not all methods of internet marketing are known to internet business owners. Low-cost internet marketing methods are available to internet business owners, and these methods are easy to implement. These low-cost marketing methods make it simple for anyone with an internet business to make that business a financial success. An internet business owner doesn?t have to be a corporate giant in order to receive the internet marketing it deserves.

For internet businesses and websites to obtain the highest search engine rankings, they must receive an adequate amount of internet traffic. The more the traffic, the higher the ranking. When marketing a website and looking for low-cost methods, this seems like an unfair disadvantage. Internet business owners seeking more traffic submit their websites to search engines in order to increase traffic. If search engines won?t list websites high upon their lists when traffic is low, how can internet business owners receive the traffic they need in order to gain higher search engine rankings and a chance at success? This is a marketing nightmare for those looking for low-cost marketing methods. Link exchanges are the answers to those wanting low-cost internet marketing and high search engine rankings.

Internet business owners looking for low-cost internet marketing should seriously consider becoming involved in link exchange opportunities.Exchanging links with other business websites is not just a low-cost marketing method, exchanging business links is often free. There are websites where those wishing to exchange links can find compatible link partners also interested in low-cost and free marketing through increased website traffic.

Once internet business owners are receiving the necessary website traffic in order to achieve high ranking search engine status, they should submit their internet business website to all of the major search engines. Search engine submission and marketing is low-cost and often free through search engine submission services. Website owners using these services are generally asked to place a link to the website submission service on their website. With proper keyword density and meta tags, business websites will achieve higher rankings on major search engine lists. Marketing a business website through low-cost and free online services is an effective and intelligent method of internet business promotion.

Obama touts benefits of auto bailout as debate looms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama sought on Saturday to sustain momentum from Vice President Joe Biden's strong debate showing by touting the benefits of one of his signature actions, the rescue of the U.S. auto industry, as he prepared for his next debate with Republican Mitt Romney.

"We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt," Obama said in his weekly radio address. "We bet on American workers and American ingenuity, and three years later, that bet is paying off in a big way."

The president will drop from view for several days to prepare for his second debate with Romney on Tuesday. By focusing on the health of the auto industry, currently benefiting from strong sales, Obama is reminding voters he came to the industry's rescue. Romney had opposed government help for automakers.

Obama is hoping to build on Biden's confident performance at the vice presidential debate on Thursday after his own listless debate performance last week gave Romney a sharp boost in opinion polls. He meets the Massachusetts governor for the second of three debates on Tuesday evening in a town-hall format.

In his address, Obama highlighted trade agreements that helped promote sales of U.S. autos abroad. Romney has called the Obama administration's record on trade weak and promised to wage much more aggressive campaigns to open markets abroad to U.S. goods and services.

"I want to see more cars on the road in places like South Korea imported from Detroit and Toledo and Chicago," Obama added.

Obama also said that "after 30 years of inaction, we raised fuel standards so that by the middle of the next decade, cars and light trucks will average almost 55 miles per gallon - nearly double what they get today."

funnelcloud: DIY shower/tub shelf

DIY shower & tub shelf
Larry and I have recently (finally) begun to tackle a number of simple woodworking projects that have been on my To Do List for ages.?Of course, now that the weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter, our outdoor working time has become limited - resulting in a pile of power tools and half-finished projects residing on our dining room floor. (Will they stay there all winter? Only time will tell...) Oh, how I wish our house had a basement or a garage or a workshop!

Anyway, I finished a project! Ta-da! Nobody lost a finger! DIY shower/tub shelf:
DIY shower & tub shelf
DIY shower & tub shelf

Functional, organized, and pretty.?

(Doesn't everyone arrange their shower bottles in rainbow order? And yes, those are ketchup-style squirt bottles!)

Not only that, it's a dual-purpose project that solved two problems at once. (That totally counts as two projects, right?)
DIY shower & tub shelf
DIY shower & tub shelf
Last winter, I began a tradition of taking a hot bath on Sunday nights (while Larry watched his zombie show). I put my iPad, a few candles, and a glass of wine on a shelf across the tub and spent the evening watching HBO in the bath while my toes shriveled up into raisins. What I didn't tell you (and tried to hide in the pictures), was that my tub "shelf" was actually a bloated piece of particle board that Larry found in the shed. (Don't worry, I wiped the cobwebs off first.) It held my wine, but let's face it: it was gross.

So, gross cobweb-encrusted tub shelf was Problem #1. Problem #2 was the lack of proper storage for shampoo bottles and other shower necessities. I admit, I hate those over-the-shower-head storage caddies. I've never seen one that was the slightest bit attractive. And the kind that stick to the tile with suction cups? We've all experienced the *BAM!* Oh shit, there went the shampoo bottle! middle-of-the-night tub crash, right? The alternative to shower caddies is equally annoying: cramming all the bottles onto the corners of the tub ledge. But that's what we were doing because I was too stubborn to buy a shower caddy that I didn't like.

So when I decided to build a tub shelf, I also wanted it to function as shower storage for all those bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel that had accumulated in the corners of the tub. Since a shower shelf would be subjected to, well, showers twice a day, it needed to shed water and be waterproof. I came up with a slat design using 1x3s that would allow water to drain through slots between the boards. (Yes, I realize that water can still sit on the slats, but at least a huge puddle can't form like it would on a solid shelf.) I also coated the shelf with polyurethane to give it a smooth finish and protect it from water.

By day, it's a shower shelf. By night, it's a tub shelf:

It's quite sturdy and I suppose it could also be used as a seat, however, I didn't care to test this theory and risk a) busting my new shelf, or b) getting a splinter in my ass.

View of the bottom of the shelf - I didn't just want the screws to be countersunk, I wanted them fully recessed. You can do this by using a forstner drill bit:
DIY shower & tub shelf
The screws are zinc screws and should be rust-proof. Before assembling, I brushed all the shelf pieces with four or five coats of water-based matte polyurethane. (The cut ends of the wood got eight coats.) I hope I used the right product for this, and I'll report back in a few months as to how the shelf is holding up in the wet environment of my shower. (I considered using a product that is used to seal decks, but the can carried a warning of FOR EXTERIOR USE ONLY, so I was concerned that this meant it was stinky and not something I'd want in my shower. Also, such products usually require reapplication on a yearly basis and I'm just too lazy for that. So let's hope the poly protects it and my shelf doesn't rot.)

Successful project completion = Reward yourself by pouring a glass of wine and turning the lights down low:

Sound Advice On Making Bankruptcy Work For You | Siben & Siben ...

TIP! Never forget that you still deserve to enjoy life while you go through the bankruptcy process. It can be several months between the initial filing and the final discharge of debts.

If you are facing the possibility of bankruptcy and are looking for information to help you in your decision, you?ve come to the right place. There is a lot of information online that can help you avoid bankruptcy. Read on to learn how to avoid bankruptcy.

TIP! It is important to be upfront with all your financial information when filing for bankruptcy. Omissions or errors may cause your case to take more time to resolve, or even be rejected entirely.

If you are planning to file for bankruptcy, never give or transfer any money or other assets to another party within 1 year of filing. Why shouldn?t you transfer assets? It?s because this looks as if you?re attempting to hide your money so that you can wiggle out of debt. Depending on the asset, it may be safe from creditors, in any case. Even so, it is never okay to try and hide assets, so delay filing if you have done that recently.

TIP! Do not even think about paying your taxes with credit and petitioning for bankruptcy right after. In most states, you will still owe money to the IRS and have to take care of the interest of your credit cards.

Some attorneys offer a phone service for free where creditors will be referred to when they wish to contact you regarding an account that?s delinquent. All you have to do is provide the number. Your creditor can then call and confirm that this debt is included in your bankruptcy filing. By doing this, you can stop these calls from occurring again.

TIP! Don?t file for bankruptcy if it is not completely necessary. You may be able to get away with going through debt consolidation to help make the payments easier to deal with.

Carefully pick the lawyer you will use when filing for bankruptcy. This kind of law is usually where inexperienced attorney?s reside. Be sure your lawyer has years of experience and is licensed properly. You can learn of a lawyer?s history and reviews from past clients via the Internet.

TIP! Stop using credit cards as soon as you decide to file for bankruptcy. You might be tempted to go on a shopping spree, but this will be frowned upon by the court.

Take steps to ensure your home is protected. Filing for bankruptcy doesn?t automatically involve losing your home. Depending on certain conditions, you may very well end up being able to keep your home. You can also investigate your state?s homestead exemption, an option that might enable you to keep your home if certain financial requirements are met.

TIP! Learn everything you can. If you can?t afford to hire a lawyer to handle your bankruptcy proceedings, it can be tempting to do-it-yourself.

If your lawyer doesn?t have sufficient experience with bankruptcies, you could be wasting your time. There is a long list of personal bankruptcy attorney for you to choose from. A lot of people filing claims will jump at the first available lawyer or the attorney charging the least amount of money. However, it?s in your best interest to go with the lawyer most qualified.

TIP! Don?t file for bankruptcy the income that you get is bigger than your bills. Remember that the record of your personal bankruptcy filing will be discernible on the report of your credit for as many as 10 years.

Don?t automatically assume that bankruptcy is your only option. Talk with a bankruptcy lawyer and ask about alternatives, such as debt consolidation or negotiating with creditors. For example, if you are in talks of foreclosure, you could use a modified loan to overcome your debt. There are many ways in which a lender can make adjustments that will be helpful to you. Among them are extending the loan, forgiving late charges and reducing the interest rate. Because of the fact that creditors would like to see their money they are likely to offer repayment plans versus not getting paid at all if you file for bankruptcy.

TIP! Make sure to come out of the bankruptcy better informed and better able to handle your finances. If you were hit by a bus and racked up hundreds of thousands in medical bills, you?re probably not at high risk for filing again, but if you recklessly maxed out your credit cards, you might want to rethink your habits.

Spend time with loved ones. The process for bankruptcy can be hard. It is often overwhelming, and not quick. Some people may feel embarrassed or feel their self-esteem has taken a beating from it. Some folks tend to stay in the shadows until their case has concluded. Isolating yourself from your loved ones can lead to feelings of depression. Because of this, it?s vital you keep spending some time with the people you love despite what you are currently going through.

TIP! Make sure you are always honest when filing your petition for bankruptcy. If you are dishonest and try to keep things from the court, you can lose your chance to file altogether.

The right planning can help you get what you need. If aren?t in such dire circumstances that you must file for bankruptcy immediately, it might be a good idea to wait if there is a reasonable chance you can improve your financial situation. Remember to keep working towards your goal of avoiding bankruptcy. Now is the time to begin making plans for the future

Research in cell communication system wins 2012 chemistry Nobel

G protein-coupled receptors crucial targets for drugs

Web edition : 6:44 am

Robert Lefkowitz of Duke University in Durham, N.C., and Brian Kobilka of Stanford University will share the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry for work on molecules that help cells communicate with the outside world.

The molecules, called G-protein?coupled receptors, sit in a cell's outer membrane and identify hormones, odor molecules and other chemicals, transmitting that information to the inside of the cell.

"They are crucially positioned to regulate virtually every known physiological process in humans," Lefkowitz said in a telephone call with the Nobel committee October 10.

That central role has made G-protein?coupled receptors the target of a wide variety of drugs, the Nobel committee noted.

Working to understand how adrenaline works in the body, Kobilka discovered that proteins that corkscrew through a cell's outer membrane seven times are at the forefront of the process. It later became clear that the adrenaline receptor, light receptors in eye cells and many other proteins in the body have this configuration.

These receptors are also all in close communication with molecules called G proteins. When a receptor latches on to a chemical in the cell's environment, it transmits that information to the G protein, which then acts as a courier to ferry the information to the rest of the cell.

Lefkowitz and Kobilka will share prize money of 8 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million.

7 Tips to Make Your Long Distance Relationship Work

It is not very difficult to keep a long distance online relationship going. Of course, there are several setbacks. But then, if you really want the relationship to amount to something meaningful, you really can make it happen. All you need to do is keep a few things in mind. Listed below are some ways how you can make your online long distance relationship work.

1. Set parameters at the onset

There ought to be certain ground rules and conditions that both of you must agree upon even before you begin to consider a relationship. Set parameters for yourselves ? something both of you must mutually decide and agree upon. There are many things like priorities, whether you are ready to relocate later on in case both of you agree to marry and get settled, career objectives, expectations from the relationship and so on. Talk about such things beforehand so both of you are clear about the apparently trivial stuff that has the potential to create problems later.

2. Keep in touch

Both of you must keep in touch by communicating on a regular basis ? often a number of times throughout the day. Not only phone calls, send messages to each other often and share emails. Make it a point to share the important occurrences in your day with him and ask him to do the same. This way both of you will be close to each other even though you are physically far from each other.

3. Do things together

Of course, since both of you stay away from each other, sometimes in different cities, if not in different countries, meeting daily is undoubtedly impossible. However, there are things like listening to the radio or a song or watching a movie or a TV show which both of you can do together simultaneously, for which you do not need to be physically close.

4. Pursue common interests

There must be certain hobbies or interests which are common for both of you. Even though you can?t be together physically, you can pursue those hobbies together and then talk about it. It will help you bond better.

Tough contest predicted in Williamhill.com Stakes at Sunderland

After showing plenty of sparkle last time, Howleys Girl is primed to make an impact on her promotion to the A4 level. Her fresh strike is good enough to believe that she can easily tackle the opposition in Williamhill.com Stakes, a 450 metres contest, taking place at Sunderland on Tuesday, October 09, 2012.

The black bitch suffered a couple of embarrassing defeats prior to her fresh success. It was a lovely act by the talented bitch. After leaving the fourth trap, she ran furiously, and took lead at the third bend.

She did not stop thereafter, and clinched the first rank by four and a quarter lengths. The black box usually does not guarantee a clean ride, but A. McNicholas? charge knows how to sort out this issue.

Although there are a few very strong contenders in the line-up, it is hard to overlook Howleys Girl, who is fully pumped following an excellent win last time around.

Among her opponents in today?s clash are: Rylance Rocket, Ballaugh Champ, Whatucallme, Curlew and Dower Maid. The ?121 event is scheduled to begin at 18:04 GMT.

Curlew, who is due to start from the first trap, has the draw in favour. But his current form is a massive issue. The white and black dog completed the order of finish on his last two trips.

Ballaugh Champ is on our shortlist. The black dog, trained by S. Linley, is flushed with pride after a recent win. His latest appearance at this level was not impressive, but still it would be foolish to overlook his chances.

Rylance Rocket has the ability to set the target for others to aim at. The brindle and white dog has a huge experience of running at this level. On the other hand, it will be very difficult for Whatucallme to make it to the first three positions.

A three-way contest among Rylance Rocket, Ballaugh Champ and Howleys Girl is on the cards. The third-named will get the lowest odds, but her chances are equally bright. We predict a nail-biting clash. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

Small pilot study suggests that T cells become more responsive in exercising cancer survivors weeks after chemo ends

WESTMINSTER, CO (October 10, 2012)Researchers may soon be able to add yet another item to the list of exercise's well-documented health benefits: A preliminary study suggests that when cancer survivors exercise for several weeks after they finish chemotherapy, their immune systems remodel themselves to become more effective, potentially fending off future incidences of cancer. The finding may help explain why exercise can significantly reduce the chances of secondary cancers in survivors or reduce the chances of cancer altogether in people who have never had the disease.

Laura Bilek, Graham Sharp, and Geoffrey Thiele, all of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Daniel Shackelford, Colin Quinn, and Carole Schneider, all of Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute, analyzed T cells in the blood of cancer survivors before and after a 12-week exercise program. They found that a significant portion of these immune cells converted from a senescent form, which isn't as effective at combating disease, to a nave form, ready to fight cancer and infections.

Their poster presentation entitled, "Effect of Exercise on T Cells in Cancer Survivors," will be discussed at The Integrative Biology of Exercise VI meeting being held October 10-13 at the Westin Westminster Hotel in Westminster, CO. This popular meeting is a collaborative effort between the American Physiological Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. The conference is supported in part by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, an institute of the National Institutes of Health, GlaxoSmithKline, Inc., Stealth Peptides, Inc., and Seahorse Biosciences. The full program is online at http://bit.ly/OrMFtN.

Exercise and Immunity

Study leader Laura Bilek explains that previous research had turned up a variety of positive associations between exercise and cancernotably, that exercise can reduce the risk of getting initial incidences of several different types of cancers, can often improve prognosis in cancer patients, and can reduce the risk of recurrence and secondary cancers survivors of some types of cancers. However, the mechanism behind these phenomena has been unknown.

Since other research has suggested that exercise can remodel the immune system, making it more effective at fighting disease in general, Bilek and her colleagues decided to investigate how exercise affects the immune system of cancer patients. Working with a group of 16 cancer survivors, all but one of who recently finished chemotherapy cancer treatment, the researchers focused on T cells, a type of immune cell that attacks a variety of infectious agents as well as cancer cells. After chemotherapy, previous research had shown that the majority of T cells become senescent, with a decreased ability to fight infections and cancers. However, Bilek says, rebuilding the population of responsive (nave) T cells is critical for regaining normal immune function and cancer-fighting ability.

The researchers first took blood samples from each of the volunteers to examine how many senescent and nave T cells each had. Then, these study subjects were all enrolled into 12-week exercise programs at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute. All programs were individualized for the study participants, incorporating elements of cardiovascular exercise, strength and endurance training, and exercises for flexibility, posture, and balance, with extra emphasis in areas where participants were weak.

After the 12-week program, the researchers drew a second blood sample from each volunteer and ran the same T cell analysis.

Another Reason to Work Out

Results showed that the ratio of senescent to nave T cells changed favorably in the majority of participants, with most of the study subjects regaining greater numbers of the nave variety.

"What we're suggesting is that with exercise, you might be getting rid of T cells that aren't helpful and making room for T cells that might be helpful," Bilek says.

She adds that this finding highlights the importance of exercise for all, including those with cancer and cancer survivors. These two populations might benefit especially from the heightened "cancer surveillance"the ability of the immune system to seek out and destroy budding cancersthat this study suggests exercise brings, Bilek explains.

"There's a litany of positive benefits from exercise," Bilek says. "If exercise indeed strengthens the immune system and potentially improves cancer surveillance, it's one more thing we should educate patients about as a reason they should schedule regular activity throughout their day and make it a priority in their lives."
