Syracuse plows through WVU and snow, 38-14

NEW YORK (AP) ? The weather made passing at the Pinstripe Bowl perilous, so Syracuse sent Prince-Tyson Gulley and Jerome Smith dashing through West Virginia and the snow.

Gulley ran for a career-best 208 yards and had three touchdowns, Smith added 157 yards, and the Orange bid a blustery farewell to the Big East with a 38-14 victory Saturday.

Syracuse (8-5) will enter the Atlantic Coast Conference on a roll after finishing this season with six wins in its last seven games, capped by its second postseason victory at Yankee Stadium in the last three years.

In a bowl played in a baseball stadium, with weather more suited for a playoff game in Green Bay, the team that plays in a dome ended up being better equipped to handle the elements.

"The football Gods brought snow," said Smith, who carried a season-high 30 times. "The football Gods from Syracuse brought us some snow and it changed even West Virginia's game. They had to run a little bit more than they were used to. We ran the ball a little bit more than we're used to and did what we were supposed to do."

Syracuse finished with a season-high 369 yards on the ground and beat its former Big East rival from West Virginia, now playing in the Big 12, for a third straight time.

"They just did a better job than us at the line of scrimmage," Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen said. "To be in a game like this when you've got to rely on your run defense to help you win and you're not able to do it, it's frustrating."

Geno Smith connected with Stedman Bailey for two touchdown passes for West Virginia (7-6), but the Mountaineers' quarterback also was sacked in the end zone in the first half and called for intentional grounding in the end zone in the third quarter to give Syracuse a second safety.

Smith, who was an early Heisman Trophy front-runner as the Mountaineers got off to a 5-0 start this season, was 16 for 26 for 197 yards in the final game of his record-breaking career. The NFL awaits.

Same goes for Ryan Nassib, though Syracuse didn't ask much of its talented senior quarterback. He threw two touchdown passes and an interception. His most impressive feat on this day was surviving being driven into the cold turf by Terence Garvin on a sack in the first half. Nassib missed only one play.

"It's my last game, man, nothing's going to take me out," he said.

Especially against a West Virginia team the Orange felt didn't give them much credit after two straight victories over the Mountaineers.

"It was about us going out there and getting respect," tackle Justin Pugh said. "They didn't give us any respect. We kind of said three strikes you're out. Beat them three straight times, so they really can't say anything now."

Snow fell just about all game, giving most of the field a white dusting. Fans were bundled and players not in the game tried to do the same. It took a while for those potent offenses ? both ranked in the top 25 nationally in yards per game ? to heat up, which seemed appropriate considering the conditions.

"Cold. Cold," said Jerome Smith, a junior from Delaware. "I never got a chance to play in the snow, but it was good."

His running mate from Akron, Ohio, had just a bit more experience playing in wintry weather.

"In pee-wees I played in some (snow) like this but not in high school," said Gulley, who carried 25 times. "It was fun."

A goal-line stand by West Virginia in the second quarter kept Syracuse out of the end zone, but set up the Orange for a scoring run.

Left at the 1, the Mountaineers tried to pass out of their end zone, but Geno Smith was smothered by blitzing linebackers Cameron Lynch and Siriki Diabate to make it 5-0 ? a baseball score, of course.

The Orange followed that up with a 33-yard touchdown run by Gulley to make it 12-0 with 6:07 left in the second.

The Mountaineers responded with their first sustained drive. Bailey took a quick pass, darted and broke tackles, and scooted 32 yards to the end zone to make it 12-7.

The Orange extended the lead to 12 to start the second half when they caught a break ? and a touchdown pass. Nassib's throw was tipped around the goal line, but floated safely into the waiting arms of intended receiver Beckett Wales for a 10-yard score.

West Virginia appeared to answer with a touchdown of its own. Andrew Buie broke free for a 28-yard TD run on fourth-and-2. Not so fast. A holding call on the Mountaineers wiped out the play and sent Holgorsen on to the field screaming at the officials.

It didn't help. Instead of a touchdown, a punt.

Holgorsen had nothing to say about the call and was more disappointed with how his team responded.

"We did a poor job of continuing to play. A poor job of overcoming some things," he said.

Moments later another close call, this time on a fumble by Geno Smith which was reviewed to determine if it was an incomplete pass, went Syracuse's way, and again the Orange capitalized.

On the next play, Gulley broke through the line, bounced to the outside and went 67 yards for a touchdown to make it 26-7 with 6:52 left in the third.

West Virginia wouldn't let Syracuse pull away. Smith found Bailey deep down the sideline, beating one-on-one coverage for a 29-yard score 1:11 later.

Back came the Orange, nine plays, 70 yards, with Gulley taking a swing pass from Nassib 10 yards to make it 33-14.

From there the 60th meeting between these teams, but first in a bowl, was a romp in the snow for Syracuse.

India rape victim's body cremated in New Delhi

NEW DELHI (AP) ? A young woman who died after being gang-raped and beaten on a bus in India's capital was cremated Sunday amid an outpouring of anger and grief by millions across the country demanding greater protection for women from sexual violence.

The cremation took place during a private ceremony in New Delhi soon after the woman's body arrived in the capital on a special Air India flight from Singapore, where she died at a hospital Saturday after being sent for medical treatment.

The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from going to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from rape victims, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts can drag on for years.

Security was tight, with no access to the public or media at the crematorium.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party, were at the airport to receive the body and meet family members of the victim who were on the flight.

Hours after the victim died early Saturday, Indian police charged six men who had been arrested in connection with the attack with murder, adding to accusations that they beat and gang-raped the woman on a New Delhi bus on Dec. 16.

New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the six suspects face the death penalty if convicted, in a case that has triggered protests across India and raised questions about lax attitudes by police toward sexual crimes.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the victim, who has not been identified, was taken Thursday to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital, which specializes in multi-organ transplants, but her condition worsened, with her vital signs deteriorating.

Following her death, thousands of Indians lit candles, held prayer meetings and marched through various cities and towns, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, on Saturday night to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment.

But even as thousands mourned the rape victim's death and in a sign of how pervasive such crimes are, police in West Bengal state were investigating another suspected gang-rape and death.

In the latest case, the family of a woman said she and her husband were attacked by six men as they returned home after working at a brick factory.

They dragged the woman into a nearby farm after pouring acid into her husband's mouth, the family said.

The woman was found dead with multiple injuries, said police officer Bhaskar Mukherjee, adding he was waiting for an autopsy report.

No charges have been laid. Another police officer, Sugata Sen, said four men had been detained for questioning.

The alleged attack is similar to the Dec. 16 case, where the woman and a male friend, who also has not been identified, were on a bus after watching a film when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

Dozens of protesters tried to break through a police cordon Sunday and march to the parliament building in the Indian capital, but were pushed back. The protesters, belonging to the student wing of main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, shouted anti-government slogans as they marched.

Hundreds of policemen have sealed off the high-security area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests. The area is home to parliament, the president's palace, the prime minister's office and several ministries.

Gandhi assured the protesters in a statement that the rape victim's death "deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, the shameful social attitudes and mindset that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such an impunity."

Attitudes by Indians toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen as provocative.

Meanwhile, a United Nations statement said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "offers his sincerest condolences" to the victim's family and "utterly condemns this brutal crime."

"Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated," the statement said. "Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected."

Ban urged the Indian government to take steps to deter such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice, and to "strengthen critical services for rape victims," it said.

Hornets extend Bobcats' skid to 18 games

(AP) ? Eric Gordon made his return to the lineup Saturday night. And for the better part of 24 minutes, he looked as if he'd never been away.

Gordon had 24 points and seven assists, helping the New Orleans Hornets overcome a 21-point first-half deficit and extend the Charlotte Bobcats' losing streak to 18 games with a 98-95 victory Saturday night.

The Bobcats are one game away from a winless December. They haven't won since Nov. 24 and are closing in on their franchise-record 23-game losing streak to close the 2011-12 season.

Gordon, who hadn't played since April 22 following arthroscopic right knee surgery, was 5 of 13 from the field and 12 of 14 from the free throw line. He had two steals and two turnovers.

"I felt pretty good, I was kind of surprised," Gordon said. "Now I'm just going to try to get better and better from here. I wouldn't have had a chance to help this team earlier with my knee, but I'm glad everything is working out now."

Ryan Anderson had 19 points and made a pair of 3-pointers in the final period as the Hornets won for the second time in three games.

Anderson was all smiles after the game.

"I haven't had open looks like that in quite a while," he said.

On a late possession, Gordon drove the lane drawing attention from defenders and passed the ball outside where Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer to push New Orleans' lead to six.

Roger Mason, who had all 13 points in the second half, added another 3-pointer on the next possession because of the attention the Bobcats were paying to Gordon.

Anderson said those are the tough moments defenders will be forced to contend with when they face the Hornets the rest of the way.

"He's a special player," Anderson said of Gordon. "There are not a lot of guys like him in the NBA. He hasn't quit warmed up to be 100 percent comfortable yet with this group on the court, but to come out and take over like that, that is the mark of a special player."

Hornets coach Monty Williams said he didn't expect that type of production from Gordon in his first game back.

"I certainly thought he would be able to help guys and make guys better," Williams said. "But I didn't think he'd score 24 points. His defense will get better the more he gets in shape."

The Bobcats had two chances to tie the game after the Hornets threw the ball away with 11 seconds left, but Ben Gordon and Ramon Sessions both missed 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 22 points and nine rebounds and Gerald Henderson added 19 points for the Bobcats.

Kidd-Gilchrist outplayed former Kentucky teammate Anthony Davis in the first half, scoring 18 points on 9 of 11 shooting.

"I had it going a little bit," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "That's going against my best friend, so of course it's special."

But the No. 2 overall pick left the game near the end of the first half after scratching the cornea in his right eye while diving for a loose ball.

He returned in the third quarter wearing protective goggles, but wasn't the same looking a little tentative and less aggressive. He had only four points in limited action in the second half.

"The thing with MKG that is incredible, and typical, is that he just played through it," Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said. "He's a competitor and he gave us what we had and that was just sure willpower. Pretty incredible."

The Bobcats came in having lost 17 straight games, and the Hornets had lost 12 of their past 13 entering the game.

Charlotte jumped on the visitors early.

The Hornets led by as many as 21 in the second quarter before the Hornets stormed back to tie the game entering the final period behind nine third-quarter points from Greivis Vasquez and seven from Gordon.

New Orleans finally took the lead with 5:47 left when Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Hornets. Gordon followed with another 3-pointer on the next possession and they'd never give up the lead.

It was a dramatic shift of momentum after the Bobcats dominated the first half. Charlotte shot 64 percent from the field in the first half and took a 57-40 lead at the break, outscoring the Hornets 21-0 on fast breaks and 38-16 in the paint.

"We stopped being as aggressive in the second half as the first," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "We weren't attacking."

As for the losing streak, Dunlap said "eventually we are our own solution. We can't look external."

NOTE: Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap picked up his first technical foul of the season for arguing a call during the third quarter. ... Hakim Warrick had his first double-double for the Bobcats with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

TigerLogic Acquires Storycode For Up To $7.25M To Bolster How Brands Reach Mobile Users

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 9.03.18 PMTigerLogic, a company with a market cap of about $56 million that provides data management and app development solutions for enterprises, said it agreed to acquire Portland mobile developer Storycode for up to $7.25 million in cash and stock today. The Irvine-based company says it will integrate Storycode’s technology into its social visualization platform called Postano. Yes, “social visualization” platform is a little vague, but basically Postano lets brands embed widgets with content from social networks on their sites. They also offer an internal dashboard that lets clients monitor what people are saying about them on Twitter or Facebook, and they can also help with creating custom Facebook tabs and apps. Storycode has a mobile app publishing platform that media companies like Thomson Reuters, USA Today, NBC and CBS use to create iPhone and iPad apps. The mobile publishing platform will plug right into TigerLogic’s Postano product. According to an SEC filing, each share of Storycode’s stock will be converted into $6.75 million worth of TigerLogic’s stock. On top of that, a single share of preferred stock in Storycode will get converted into the right to receive $250,000. TigerLogic is also giving Storycode $100,000 in bridge financing and is taking on up to $150,000 in the company’s liabilities. Storycode actually has been through one previous acquisition. It was previously called FreeRange Communications after it spun out of Handmark in 2011. The company changed its name to Storycode last May after acquiring a Portland-based mobile agency.

Pinterest Sued by Former Business Partner of Early Investor - Liz ...

Pinterest has arrived at that special milestone for any successful start-up: The day you get sued by someone who says the whole thing was his idea.

pinterest_scalesTheodore F. Schroeder of Ocean City, N.J., filed a lawsuit yesterday in New York district court, alleging misappropriation, unjust enrichment and breach of fiduciary duty against Pinterest and its early investor Brian Cohen.

?The lawsuit against Pinterest is baseless and we will fight it aggressively,? a spokesman for Pinterest said today.

Update: Schroeder?s attorney,?Richard Scheff of Montgomery McCracken, emailed the following comment:??The bottom line is that it?s illegal to steal an idea for your own benefit without regard to the originator of that idea. Here, Mr. Cohen?joined an existing enterprise in which Mr Schroeder had a majority interest, and then took without permission or right Mr. Schroeder?s ideas, concepts, web application and technology.?

Cohen did not reply to a request for comment.

Schroeder?s complaint says that he and Cohen worked together in 2007 and 2008 on a start-up venture that was an antecedent to Pinterest. According to Schroeder, the ideas he built for that project ? called Rendezvoo, and later, Skoopwire ? were incorporated into Pinterest, which Cohen provided early funding for in 2009.

Rendezvoo was a ?a Web site where people meet to share opinions, views, items and tastes on a variety of subjects ? product, services, events, politics, economics ? nearly anything of human interest? with about 5,000 users. It included two ?lynchpin? concepts that later found their way into Pinterest: ?Boards? for posting content and so-called ?infinite scrolling,? where users don?t have to load another page to view more content.

Plus, Schroeder said, Rendezvoo had a ?pink and purple color scheme to attract female users,? and Pinterest is now well-known for its appeal to women.

Schroeder and Cohen, who is a public relations entrepreneur and chairman of the New York Angels investing group, had worked together on Rendezvoo as well as a later pivot called Skoopwire, which was a free press-release service for new products. Cohen, who served as chairman and CEO, apparently pushed the team away from its more Pinterest-like ideas for Rendezvous, and then later he and Schroeder had a falling out over equity and roles.

The lawsuit accuses Cohen of striking a ?Faustian deal? with the founders of Pinterest. ?In 2009, a year after Cohen had caused a deadlock ? Cohen had given Plaintiff?s ideas and applications to young entrepreneurs.?

One particularly oddball aspect of the case is that, outside of the lawsuit, I wasn?t able to find much of any information about Schroeder. He is apparently a Columbia Law School graduate and Internet entrepreneur who has virtually no online presence ? unless perhaps he is the Ted Schroeder of Ocean City, N.J. who owns a gluten-free taco shop.

Update: According to Scheff, Schroeder is not the taco shop owner; he is a young practicing lawyer and ?self-taught computer genius??working in the Philadelphia region at a company that he does not want to disclose.

Here?s the full lawsuit:

New York?s MTA releases Subway Time app, lets users know exact train arrival times

New York?s MTA releases Subway Time app, lets users know exact train arrival timesThe New York MTA (Metropolitan Transport Authority) has released an app that will allow users to access up to the minute information on when a subway train will arrive at their chosen station. The app which is called Subway Time will initially cover seven stations with more to come in the future.

MTA Subway Time gives you real-time train arrival information for selected routes of the New York City subway system. Knowing exactly when your train will arrive will reduce the time you spend waiting on the subway platform, and let you know of any service delays or reroutes before you pay your fare.

The seven lines that the app will provide up to the minute information for are Lines 1 through to 6 and the the 42nd Street shuttle. The service hasn't come cheap either; according to the Wall Street Journal, new signalling technology and sensing equipment has cost the MTA a staggering $228 million to install over the last eleven years. Further additions to the lines covered by the app will roll out soon with the L line and No 7 line set to be added by 2016.

The data that feeds the official MTA app will also be made available to third party developers to incorporate into their apps too. This is a good move as the MTA?s Subway Time app could do with a bit of polish and user interface redesign. It certainly isn't the most elegant app or that user friendly either. Also strangely enough it hasn't been optimized for the iPhone 5?s larger screen either.

Egypt's president warns against dangers to economy

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist president used his first address before the newly convened upper house of parliament on Saturday to warn against any unrest that could harm the country's battered economy, as he renewed calls for the opposition to join in a national dialogue.

In the nationally televised speech, Mohammed Morsi said the nation's entire efforts should be focused on "production, work, seriousness and effort" now that a new constitution came into effect this week. He blamed protests and violence the past month for causing further damage to an economy already deteriorating from the turmoil since the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak early last year.

In an alarm bell over the economy, the central bank announced soon after Morsi's speech that foreign currency reserves ? which have been bleeding away for nearly two years ? are at a "critical" level, the minimum needed to cover foreign debt payments and buy strategic imports.

Morsi's strongly worded address to lawmakers appeared aimed at sending a message to the mainly liberal and secular opposition not to engage in any new protests, depicting unrest as a threat to the priority of rebuilding.

All sides must "realize the needs of the moment" and work only through "mature democracy while avoiding violence," Morsi told the 270-member upper house, or Shura Council. "We condemn and reject all forms of violence by individuals, groups, institutions and even from the nation and its government. This is completely rejected."

He appeared to chide the opposition for not working with him.

"We all know the interests of the nation," he said. "Would any of us be happy if the nation goes bankrupt? I don't doubt anyone's intentions. But can anyone here be happy if the nation is exposed to economic weakness?"

The mainly liberal and secular opposition accuses Morsi of concentrating all power on the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, and other Islamists and steamrolling any alternative voices.

The main opposition groups have refused to join a national dialogue convened by Morsi, saying past talks have brought no compromise. They also stayed out of the president's appointments last week of a few opposition figures to the overwhelmingly Islamist Shura Council, calling the move tokenism.

The bitterness between the two sides was inflamed by the crisis of the past month leading up to the referendum that passed the new constitution. Mass street rallies were held by both the opposition trying to stop the charter and by Morsi's Islamist supporters determined to push it to victory. Clashes that erupted left 10 dead. The charter was approved by 64 percent, but with a low turnout of around 33 percent. Civil society groups and the opposition also point to incidents of fraud in the vote they say have not been properly investigated.

Opponents fear the new charter will consecrate the Islamists' power. The document allows for a stronger implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, than in the past and has provisions that could limit civil rights and freedoms of minorities.

Morsi has depicted his national dialogue as a chance for all factions to have a voice in planning the next steps and drawing up key legislation to put before the upper house, including a law organizing parliamentary elections. So far, mainly Islamists and only a few small opposition parties are participating.

Liberal former lawmaker Amr Hamzawi said the president's speech offered no new insights and failed to acknowledge significant opposition to the Islamist-drafted constitution. Hamzawi was among those who walked out in protest of the Islamists' handling of the draft process earlier this year.

"We need binding mechanisms to amend the flawed constitution, guarantee that the legislative role of the upper house of parliament will be temporary and to ensure fair elections," he said. "We will not enter into fraud elections each and every time."

Morsi's address aimed to set the tone as the Shura Council begins work on a slate of new laws. The upper house normally has few powers but it will now serve as the law-making body until a new lower house is chosen in national elections expected within a few months. Two thirds of the Shura Council members were elected in voting last winter, but few Egyptians bothered to vote, and Islamist allies of Morsi swept the chamber.

The ultraconservative Salafi al-Nour Party, the second strongest party after the Brotherhood's political wing, suffered a blow this week when its founder and chief Emad Abdel-Ghafour resigned to start a new party, Al-Watan. He took with him around 150 members, including many who were elected to office. The fracturing of the party may bolster the Brotherhood in the coming elections.

In his speech, Morsi repeatedly said it was time to return to "production" and "work." But he did not give details on an overall economic program, including crucial questions like how the government will tackle a crippling budget deficit or carry out expected tax hikes or reductions of subsidies.

The impending austerity measures are major concerns in a country where some 40 percent of the 85 million population live near or below the poverty line of surviving on $2 a day. Morsi's government has requested a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund to bridge the budget deficit, but talks are on hold after the government reversed plans for tax hikes this month.

Instead, Morsi denounced those who he said were spreading panic about Egypt's economy, saying the country will "not go bankrupt." He underlined that banks were healthy, after a rush to buy dollars the past week over fears of devaluation of the Egyptian pound.

"Those who talk about bankruptcy, they are the ones who are bankrupt. Egypt will never be bankrupt and will not kneel, God willing," he said to a round of applause.

He directly blamed the past month's violence for Standard & Poor's downgrading this week of Egypt's long-term credit rating one level this week to B-, six steps below investment grade.

Morsi presented the country's foreign currency reserves, currently at $15 billion, as up slightly from last year, though he acknowledged they were still down dramatically from around $36 billion in 2010.

After last year's anti-Mubarak uprising, foreign investment and tourism ? one of the country's biggest money makers ? dried up. With fewer dollars coming in, the central bank has been spending reserves furiously to prop up the currency and pay for key imports. The slight uptick in reserves from last year is mainly due to hundreds of millions of dollars provided by the Gulf nation of Qatar.

In its statement Saturday, the central bank announced the introduction of a new auction system for banks buying and selling U.S. dollars, urging citizens to "ration usage" of foreign currency in favor of the Egyptian pound.

Amr Adly, who heads the Social and Economic Justice Unit at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, said Morsi's speech failed to outline a real economic recovery plan.

"We need to know the reality of the economic situation and have an idea of the measures that will be taken to address this situation," Adly said. "We are not bankrupt yet because we can still service the debt, but we are on the verge of bankruptcy."

2013 NFL Draft: Aaron Murray has big decision upcoming

Aaron Murray has been terrific this season, but can he leave a team that has championship aspirations in 2013?

The Georgia Bulldogs came within a few yards of being in the National Championship Game, something that has to be weighing on the mind of Aaron Murray while he decides whether or not to enter the NFL Draft in April.

Murray has been the source of much conjecture when it comes to where he would be drafted, with some calling him a second-day pick while Tony Dungy said he would take him with the No. 1 overall pick.

Still, Murray has some more time to make his decision and is going to use it, debating if a senior season in Athens will help his draft stock or potentially hurt it, according to dogbytes.com. Right now, Murray just wants to focus on the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Capital One Bowl.

"We sat down a little bit and talked about it. It was mostly my parents doing the pros and cons. I?m just sitting there watching TV as they talked about it. We talked about it a little bit, but I told them I mostly want to focus on this game and talk about it more when I get home after the game."

If he enters, he will be in a somewhat weak quarterback class along with Geno Smith, Mike Glennon, Ryan Nassib and Matt Barkley.

Health of George H.W. Bush 'improving'

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush remains in intensive care at a Houston hospital, but he's improving.

Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath said Friday that the 88-year-old former president is continuing to improve. He says Bush is "alert and, as always, in good spirits."

McGrath says Bush's conversations with doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital now include singing.

He says physicians remain "cautiously optimistic that the current course of treatment will be effective."

Bush has been hospitalized since Nov. 23. He was moved into intensive care on Sunday for treatment of a fever following a bronchitis-related cough.

Forest Canopy Color Reveals CO2 Uptake

60-Second Science

Tree leaf colors provide a good proxy for its photosynthetic productivity, indicating how much carbon dioxide the tree is sequestering. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

When autumn rolls around, the leaf peepers come out in force. Armed with digital cameras, they record the most spectacular displays of fall foliage. Well according to a study in the journal Functional Ecology [Toshie Mizunuma et al, The relationship between carbon dioxide uptake and canopy colour from two camera systems in a deciduous forest in southern England], those images may be more than just pretty pictures. They may represent a new way to monitor climate change.

Trees take carbon dioxide, or CO2, from the atmosphere and convert it into biomass. By sopping up CO2 they help to stabilize the climate. But at the same time, they?re also affected by climate, for example, budding earlier in the season as global temperatures rise.

To understand how all this balances out, ecologists monitor how forests take up CO2. It?s a costly business that involves using a network of 500 instrument towers worldwide. So researchers got to wondering whether there might be an easier way to keep an eye on photosynthesis. And they found that digital cameras do the trick.

Analyzing two years? worth of snaps taken every half hour in a forest in southern England, the researchers discovered that a tree?s leafy colors provide a good proxy for its photosynthetic productivity. So next time you go for a walk in the woods, take only photos. And leave only data points.

Family Gardening: Attracting Wildlife to the Garden | Your Garden ...

Attracting wildlife to the home garden is an enjoyable and creative way to teach children about nature, evoke their respect for the environment and provide meaningful family together time.

THE BASICS

All wildlife requires three things for survival: food, water and cover.

FOOD

Native trees, shrubs, vines, and wildflowers provide the foliage, nectar, pollen, berries, seeds and nuts that wildlife requires to survive and thrive. As an added advantage, natives are well adapted to their particular geographic area and therefore generally require little maintenance.

There will be times when natural food sources are not readily available. This is when it is most important to provide supplemental sources of food using bird, squirrel and butterfly feeders to add to the native food sources for resident and migrating wildlife.

WATER

All wildlife requires a source of clean water for drinking and bathing. Many of us do not have a natural water source on our properties but this situation is easily remedied by adding a garden birdbath or water dish. With larger landscapes, adding a pond is an ambitious and rewarding project that will greatly enhance your efforts to increase the wildlife population.

COVER

Wildlife requires a place to hide from predators, shelter in inclement weather and a secluded place to birth their young. Trees, both dead and alive, are perfect for hiding, nesting and perching. Leafy and thorny shrubs also provide wildlife protection and a suitable hiding place.? Even if you have plenty of vegetation the addition of bird and bat houses will increase areas of wildlife safety in your landscape.

Jean Harris, convicted of murdering "Scarsdale Diet" doctor, dies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jean Harris, a former girl's school headmistress who was convicted and imprisoned for the 1980 murder of a best-selling diet doctor, has died, The New York Times reported on Friday.

Harris died on Sunday at an assisted-living facility in Connecticut, the Times said, citing her son James. She was 89.

Harris served 12 years in prison for the murder of her lover, Dr. Herman Tarnower, author of the hugely popular "Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet."

The case - with elements of violent jealousy, a celebrity victim, a love triangle involving a younger woman and the head of an exclusive boarding school - provided newspaper headlines and tabloid fodder for months.

The head of the posh Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, Harris was convicted of Tarnower's 1980 shooting death and sentenced to 15 years in prison for murder.

She was granted clemency by then New York Governor Mario Cuomo and released in 1993.

At the time of the murder, Harris, 57 and divorced, and the never-married Tarnower, 69, had been dating for more than a decade.

The doctor, who first published the "Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet," in 1978, had also been carrying on an affair with his younger receptionist.

On the night of March 10, 1980, a distraught Harris wrote a will, funeral instructions and a letter resigning her job before driving to Tarnower's home in suburban Purchase, New York, testimony at her trial showed.

Harris testified she went there with a pistol and the intention of killing herself.

An unlikely-looking murder defendant in her conservative headband and strand of pearls, Harris testified she put the gun to her head, but the couple struggled over the weapon which then went off.

Tarnower was struck by four bullets and died.

Looking back at the case earlier this year in a New York magazine article, the late author Nora Ephron called it "a tabloid dream."

"The doctor lived in an 'exclusive' Westchester home; the socialite headed a 'posh' girls' school," she wrote. "We were thrilled. When I say we, I mean me, but I also mean every woman who has ever wanted to kill a bad boyfriend."

While in New York's maximum-security Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, Harris created programs for inmates and their children, including a program allowing newborns to stay with their incarcerated mothers for a year and parenting classes.

A Children of Bedford Fund that Harris launched has raised millions of dollars to help inmates' children attend college, the Times said.

While in prison, Harris also became a cause celebre by a host of supporters, including her trial judge, who argued for her release.

Writing in support of Harris in 1988, the late newspaper columnist Murray Kempton wrote: "The only question the governor of New York ought by now to ask himself about Jean Harris is not whether he should grant her clemency, but why he already hasn't.

Cuomo rejected her applications for clemency three times before commuting her sentence when she was 69. She had suffered two serious heart attacks while in prison.

Following her release, Harris lived in New Hampshire, where she gardened, spoke publicly about the issues of women in prison and cared for her beloved golden retriever, the Times said.

Harris wrote a book about her experience, published in 1986, entitled "Stranger in Two Worlds."

Authors Shana Alexander and Diana Trilling wrote books about the case. Actress Ellen Burstyn played Harris in the 1981 made-for-television movie "The People vs. Jean Harris," while Annette Bening played her in the 2005 TV movie "Mrs. Harris."

Program helps veterans reintegrate through music

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) ? During stressful times as a combat medic in Afghanistan, Mason Sullivan found solace in Vivaldi. New Jersey native Nairobi Cruz was comforted by country music, a genre she had never heard before joining the Army. For Jose Mercedes, it was an eclectic iPod mix that helped him cope with losing an arm during a tour of duty in Iraq.

These three young veterans all say music played a crucial role in alleviating the stresses of active duty. Now, all three are enrolled in a program that hopes to use music to ease their reintegration into civilian life.

"It's a therapy session without the 'sit down, lay down, and write notes,'" Mercedes, 26, of Union City, said of the music program. "It's different ? it's an alternative that's way better."

The pilot program, called Voices of Valor, has veterans work as a group to synthesize their experiences into musical lyrics. Guided by musicians and a psychology mentor, they write and record a song, and then hold a CD release party. The program is currently under way at Montclair State University, where students participate through the school's veteran affairs program.

Developed by husband and wife team Rena Fruchter and Brian Dallow, it is open to veterans of any age and background. No musical experience is required.

Both accomplished musicians, Fruchter and Dallow created the program as part of Music for All Seasons, an organization they founded which runs musical programs for audiences at places ranging from nursing homes to prisons.

Based on their experiences working with children at shelters for victims of domestic violence, Fruchter and Dallow realized that young people too traumatized to talk about what they had been through were nevertheless willing to bang on an instrument or sing ? often leading to communication breakthroughs. They felt the same might be true for veterans, or other populations traditionally averse to more overt forms of 'talk therapy.'

"We've had situations in which veterans have been carrying their burdens deep inside for such a long time, and they come into this group and they begin to talk about things that they've never talked about before," Fruchter said. "They really open up, and it translates into some music that is really amazing and incredible and powerful."

During a recent session of the eight-week program in Montclair, music facilitators Jennifer Lampert, a former Miss USO, and Julio Fernandez, a musician and member of the band Spyro Gyra, lead a small group of young veterans in brainstorming about their experiences.

"Tired of being angry," ''Easier not to move on," ''The war at home," were phrases Lampert extracted from a discussion among the participants and she wrote each phrase in marker on large notepads fastened to a classroom blackboard. As they spoke, Fernandez strummed an acoustic guitar while Lampert sang some of the phrases the students had come up with, adjusting the beat and tempo at their suggestion. Suddenly, a musical lyric emerged: "Sometimes, I wish the past is where I stayed."

A few weeks later, the group gathered at a sound studio in Union City, where they donned headphones and clearly relished the opportunity to record their collectively written tune, "Freedom," in a professional studio.

"To see music heal people in that way, it's beautiful, and the real incredible part is you don't have to do anything but give in to the music," Lampert said. She recounted how, time and again, the facilitators of the program had watched some participants start the class with shoulders slumped, hesitant to make eye contact, and afraid to speak up. Through the process of writing music they changed, she said, into group-focused, smiling, active participants unafraid to stand up and belt out a tune.

Avoiding pop-ups can help build a huge list.

Why Pop-Ups are Bad for Internet Marketing

Back in the day when Internet browsers were simple, it was relatively easy to build a list with a pop-up or pop-under advertisement. The Chrome, Firefox, IE and Opera web browsers are smarter and are designed to help consumers avoid advertisements. New plugins and updates are often used to block any type of advertisement that is judged as unwanted. If you?re trying to capture email addresses, you?ll need all the help you can get to build a list in a short period of time.

Some people use pop-ups effectively. Not all uses are bad. Advanced marketers that already have huge lists might not be concerned with these minor details. When you?re starting out, sticking to the basics will get you where you want to go fast.

Using the Welcome Redirect WP Plugin

The Welcome Redirect WP plugin can help construct a great list in a short period of time. This method almost guarantees that every new visitor to your website will opt-in with whatever data that you request. The good thing about this method is that it requires no changes to your website. It installs easy and works well.

To use this plugin effectively, you will need to have an account with AWeber for collection of email addresses. This is the preferred company of many Internet marketers and entrepreneurs online.

MBB List Building Tip

Before you install this plugin and link it to AWeber, it?s best to have your autoresponder emails setup. This ensures that as soon as you launch the plugin on your website that you can collect email addresses and market your offers instantly.

Converting website visitors into paying customers is the very core of Internet marketing. Making use of the free and premium tools that you have available can make a difference in the amount of income you earn. Go out and build a big list using the Welcome Redirect WP Plugin.

No slowdown for small business holiday sales | WQAD.com ? Quad ...

Early numbers show it was a lackluster holiday shopping season for national retailers, with growth at its lowest point since the height of the recession in 2008.

Mastercard?s?SpendingPlus Report has sales over the two months before Christmas up only .7 percent from last year. That?s far less than some expectations, which predicted growth in the 3 to 4 percent range.

That flat line, though, doesn?t appear?to have hit local small businesses. In fact, it?s just the opposite. At Kathy Hasakis? LeClaire, Iowa, boutique, there?s been no sign of a slowdown.

?I personally?have not seen that. We try to stay competitive with our pricing here at Vignettes, and I think that that?s been reflected by shoppers who possibly were being a little more frugal or trying to stay to a budget,? said Hasakis.

At shops up and down Cody Road, it?s a similar story.

?It?s been better than the last four years I would say. I think that the economy?s picking up a little bit,? said Razzleberries owner Mary Chambers.

The small store owners credit much of their success to the town?s ability to turn holiday shopping into an event.

?We started off with Black Friday, and it was so busy that weekend, and then we went right into Small Business Appreciation Day, and we doubled what we did on Black Friday,? said Sam DenBesten at Grasshoppers Gift Shop.

Whether it?s an organized weekend like ?Christmas in LeClaire? or just another Wednesday, for small business, it?s all about the experience.

?Versus online shopping, people get away from being able to touch it and experience that; being out with friends. I think that?s the biggest thing that we as a small town have to offer,? said Hasakis.

And while the national sales forecast looks bleak, local business has gotten a boost from a different kind of forecasting.

?It?s also kind of weather related, and it?s been great for the last two years,? said Chambers.

Wednesday, the day after Christmas had already brought more shoppers, taking advantage of holiday markdowns.

?I?ve noticed that the trend is after Christmas, when everything settles down and the weather might even be bad, people kind of need another pickup and sometimes coming shopping or just getting out? it can be very good,? added Chambers.

So although Christmas may be?over, the holiday shopping season isn?t. The final?week of December actually makes up about 15 percent of the month?s sales, meaning retailers, big and small, may still have a chance to make up any lost ground.

neesonthewlis: Health & Fitness Solutions: Self-Hypnosis - thulium ...

By Mamie Nanez

It's important that you become familiar with the field of hypnosis - especially self-hypnosis - and one of the best ways to do so is to start by reading shorter reports like this one to begin your knowledge base. Delve into the subject wholeheartedly and you will find that it doesn't take long to get a well-rounded grasp of what hypnosis is all about. Hypnosis is not a difficult subject to comprehend as there's really nothing complicated about it. The same holds true for self-hypnosis.

Since we are all so different, you may find the need to use self-hypnosis many times. The important thing is not how many times you need to use a particular script for some particular goal. The only thing that counts is that you are triumphant with it and get to the target you had in the first place. There is no way to know how you will respond to self-hypnosis until you try it out. An additional point that is critical is that it takes many applications to get to the phase where your endeavours are really valuable. You will more than likely not have the greatest execution at the start and you will not be entirely at ease with the procedure.

For a self-hypnosis session to be effective, you have to choose a place that is quiet. Try to remove all distractions from the place before commencing a session.

Creating your own personal space to practice your self-hypnosis is a good thing to do. Your ideal scenario could be in a cool, low-lit room with candles and incense.

Once you have decided to use self-hypnosis, you need to make a commitment. Unless you are fully committed and have confidence it will not work for you. It is imperative that you have conviction and believe the necessary things that need to change will. Hopefully you already have a good idea of the impact that faith and conviction have for favourable results. The whole concept of hypnosis, whether it is done by a therapist or by ones self, is up for disbelief by many. There are folks that have been assisted with the use of hypnosis throughout time and in many instances.

Every script to write and design needs to be exquisite for each hypnosis session. Consider that you are trying to reach your unconscious mind directly. That means you have to bypass your ordinary consciousness that looks at the world in a critical manner. So you have to know exactly how to use the right words that will be the most effective. You can buy self-hypnosis tapes or even buy scripts from hypnotherapists. A licensed trained hypnotherapist should be where this material comes from. They are governed by hypnosis organizations that will make sure they are on the straight and narrow. Your local area, and certainly the Internet, will have people you can talk to. In conclusion, there are many other self-hypnosis tips that are available. You can learn them if you want. Just be sure you are getting quality information from the web. Building a website, and populating it with information, is very easy to do - this is why you need to be careful with the info that you find.
