Opera for Android available for download from Google Play

Attention Android users ? Opera is finally ready for prime time on your phone.

The WebKit-based Opera for Android Web browser on Tuesday finally graduated from beta, and became available for download from the Google Play store. This is the first browser Opera has released since announcing a transition in February from its own Presto rendering engine to the open-source WebKit engine that powers Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari browsers.

Opera promised its new browser will give Android users the easiest and fastest way to explore content on their phone. The company has redesigned the Opera interface, giving it a lighter colour scheme and making it more intuitive to use.

The browser boasts a feature called Discover, which Opera calls "the best thing to happen to a browser since the back button." With Discover, you can select your interests from categories like arts, news, and technology and find relevant articles with a simple swipe to the right from the home screen.

"Most people just see a fraction of what the Web has to offer," Rikard Gillemyr, executive VP of consumer products at Opera Software, said in a statement. "We check out the same sites every day, and you can get through with the latest news after just a short bus ride. We wanted to give people a relaxed way of discovering interesting articles and checking them out without any extra effort."

There's also a feature called Off-Road, which promises to help speed up browsing on "even the most sluggish of sluggishy networks, all over the world," Gillemyr said. The feature uses data compression to reduce the amount of data traffic while browsing on your phone. This should save you time and frustration when browsing on a bad connection and money when roaming while travelling.

Other features include Speed Dial for quickly calling up bookmarked pages and text reflow, which lets you view Web text at any zoom level without having to scroll sideways. You can also see a visual overview of all the pages you have open, and switch between them with the swipe of a finger.

Opera for Android is available for free from Google Play for any phone running Android 2.3 or above.

EA announces EA Sports Ignite, a next generation game engine

Thought Frostbite 3 was EA's only big next-gen games engine? Think again: the publisher just announced EA Sports Ignite at Xbox One's reveal event, a new game engine designed specifically for high-end sports titles. "EA Sports Ignite is designed specifically to help us blur the line between the real and the virtual." Andrew Wilson said as he took the stage, listing off a quartet of new games powered by the engine: FIFA, Madden NFL, NBA Live and UFC. Wilson says the engine will allow EA developers to soak its next-gen sports titles in an unprecedented amount of detail, promising to hurdle the animation limitations of current sports games by a factor of ten. The engine's computational claims are even more impressive, offering as much as "four times more calculations per second," according to Wilson, who says it will allow EA to create "human-like intelligence." I guess developers are sick of bad computer AI too.

Motorola Maxar - Computers, Math, Science, and Technology

I'll post this here on the slim chance that another WP member might have some data.

I recently obtained an old Motorola Maxar transceiver. It's a single-channel, crystal controlled unit than is set up to operate with a central repeater. The transmit frequency is 468.25 MHz, and it receives at 5 MHz lower. The PLT is 110.9 Hz ("2Z"). Deviation is +/- 5kHz. Power is about 25W. It may have once been used by an Emergency Medical Service before they all went to 800 MHz trunking.

Okay, so I've Googled all over Teh Interwebz, and have found the pinout to J601 and a few other minor details, but no schematic.

Before I start hassling with eBay or Motorola, does anyone here know where I can obtain a FREE schematic for this unit?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former general Thein Sein on Monday becomes the first Myanmar president to be welcomed to the White House in almost 47 years, crowning a dramatic diplomatic rehabilitation for his nation after years of international isolation.

But activists are angry about President Barack Obama hosting Thein Sein, and lawmakers are wary. The Myanmar leader has led the shift from decades of direct military rule, but has stalled on some reform commitments and failed to stop bloody outbursts of ethnic violence.

Thein Sein previously served in a repressive junta, and his meetings at the White House and Congress would have been all-but-impossible before he took the helm of a nominally civilian government in 2011. His name was only deleted from a blacklist barring travel to the U.S. last September.

He arrived in Washington Saturday, six months after Obama made history with an unprecedented U.S. presidential visit to the country also known as Burma. The administration's outreach to Myanmar's generals has provided an important incentive for the military to loosen controls on citizens and reduce dependence on China.

Myanmar has been rewarded by relaxation of tough economic sanctions, and Thein Sein will be addressing U.S. businessmen keen to capitalize on the opening of one of Asia's few untapped markets.

"President Thein Sein's visit underscores President Obama's commitment to supporting and assisting those governments that make the important decision to embrace reform," the White House said in its announcement of Monday's visit.

It will be the first by a Myanmar leader since a September 1966 visit by Ne Win, an independence hero-turned dictator, who began the nation's descent from regional rice bowl to economic basket case. Thein Sein visited New York last September for the U.N. General Assembly but did not come to Washington.

The U.S. last month announced it is considering duty-free access for Myanmar to U.S. markets, and there could be progress Monday toward a bilateral trade and investment framework agreement.

The most significant outcome of Thein Sein's trip could be a symbolic one. Obama is expected to use "Myanmar" ? the country name adopted by the junta in 1989 ? when he meets Thein Sein. However, the U.S. will keep using "Burma" in official documents.

Thein Sein will be accorded the protocol due to a foreign president, yet his Washington welcome will pale next to that granted last September to Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader who met Obama and was presented by Congress with the highest civilian award it can bestow.

Human rights activists and Myanmar campaigners have sharply criticized the administration for inviting Thein Sein, arguing it sends the wrong message and wastes leverage to press for further democratic change. The administration says it is important to signal U.S. support for his reform agenda, likely still opposed by military hardliners.

Ahead of the trip, Myanmar released at least 19 political prisoners in what has become a pattern for amnesties that coincide with high-profile international meetings as a way of highlighting the government's benevolent policies. Right groups say at least 160 political detainees are still held.

The government has permitted the International Committee of the Red Cross access to its notorious prisons for the first time in seven years. But hasn't allowed adequate humanitarian access to conflict zones where tens of thousands have been displaced. Authorities have failed to stop, and may have abetted in some cases, an explosion in communal violence that has killed hundreds and led to segregation of Muslim communities.

The U.S. Campaign for Burma said Thein Sein's trip follows a troubling downward trend in Myanmar, and that "instead of honoring an abusive leader" the U.S. should tie its concessions to conditions.

Former IRS commissioner heads to Hill amid scandal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawmakers are getting their first chance to question the former head of the Internal Revenue Service, the man who ran the agency when agents were improperly targeting tea party groups.

Some of the questions on Tuesday will be direct: What did you know, and when did you know it?

They also want to know why former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman didn't tell Congress that agents had been singling out conservative political groups for additional scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status ? even after he was briefed.

Shulman, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, left the IRS in November when his five-year term ended. He could prove to be a significant player in a scandal that has driven the Obama administration to distraction. Shulman is testifying before the Senate Finance Committee, which has launched a bipartisan investigation into the matter.

On Monday, the White House revealed that chief of staff Denis McDonough and other senior presidential advisers knew in late April that an upcoming inspector general's report was likely to find that IRS employees had inappropriately targeted conservative political groups.

The White House says McDonough and the other advisers did not tell President Barack Obama about the impending report, leaving him to learn the results from news reports on May 10. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama was comfortable with the fact that "some matters are not appropriate to convey to him, and this is one of them."

A Treasury official also disclosed Monday that the department told the White House twice in late April about IRS plans to address the targeting publicly, including during congressional testimony and a possible speech by Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups. White House deputy chief of staff Mark Childress and Treasury chief of staff Mark Patterson were in communication on the matter, as were lawyers at the White House and Treasury.

However, the official said Treasury did not tell the White House about Lerner's eventual decision to apologize for the targeting at a conference on May 10. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and insisted on anonymity.

The IRS is an independent agency within the Treasury Department. Because of that independent status, the official said Treasury deferred to the IRS in its decision about how to make the targeting public.

A new poll by the Pew Research Center says 42 percent of adults think the Obama administration was involved in targeting conservative groups. Thirty-one percent said the decision was made by IRS employees, while the rest said they didn't know.

On Monday, the panel's top two members raised questions about the agency's rationale for why agents targeted conservative groups in the first place. IRS officials have said the agency was facing a large increase in the number of applications for tax-exempt status, so agents adopted inappropriate shortcuts to identify groups that may be involved in political activity.

But at the time when agents started targeting conservative groups, the number of applications was relatively flat, according to a report by the agency's inspector general.

Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the ranking Republican, sent a letter to the agency Monday, asking for an explanation. The letter included 41 separate requests for information. They gave the IRS until May 31 to respond.

The two senators said the IRS had not been forthcoming about the issue in the past.

"Targeting applicants for tax-exempt status using political labels threatens to undermine the public's trust in the IRS," Baucus and Hatch wrote. "Lack of candor in advising the Senate of this practice is equally troubling."

For more than a year, from 2011 through the 2012 election, members of Congress repeatedly asked Shulman about complaints from tea party groups that they were being harassed by the IRS.

Shulman's responses, usually relayed by a deputy, did not acknowledge that agents had ever targeted tea party groups for special scrutiny. At a congressional hearing March 22, 2012, Shulman was adamant in his denials.

"There's absolutely no targeting. This is the kind of back and forth that happens to people" who apply for tax-exempt status, Shulman said at the House Ways and Means subcommittee hearing.

The IRS has said Shulman did not know about the targeting at the time of the hearing.

The agency's inspector general says he told Shulman on May 30, 2012, that his office was auditing the way applications for tax-exempt status were being handled, in part because of complaints from conservative groups. However, the inspector general, J. Russell George, said he did not reveal the results of his investigation.

George was also testifying at Tuesday's hearing. So was Steven Miller, who took over as acting commissioner in November, when Shulman's term expired. Last week, Obama forced Miller to resign.

George issued a report last week blaming ineffective management for allowing agents to inappropriately target conservative groups for more than 18 months during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

The agents were trying to determine whether the groups were engaged in political activity. Certain tax-exempt groups are allowed to engage in politics, but politics cannot be their primary mission. It is up to the IRS to make the determination, so agents are supposed to look for clues when reviewing applications for tax-exempt status.

In March 2010, agents starting singling out groups with "Tea Party" or "Patriots" on their applications. By August 2010, it was part of the written criteria for identifying groups that required more scrutiny, according to George's report.

Agents did not flag similar progressive or liberal labels, though some liberal groups received additional scrutiny because their applications were singled out for other reasons, the report said.

Usually upon further investigation, I find that the personal trainer or gym owner was sold by a salesperson who promised success because their direct mailer has a ?circulation of 30,000 people in your zip code, who make $50,000 and up.?

Who are these 30,000 people, and why will they choose to spend their little discretionary income on your gym instead of the other 40 gyms that advertised to them this week?

In most cases, these approaches to marketing are unsuccessful because they are not targeted enough, nor do they target YOUR audience.?

Think about it for a minute?

Would you prescribe the same workout routine or training plan to every person that walks in your door??

Of course not!?You?d probably start with a consult to determine if a client can participate in your program, and then make a custom plan tailored to their needs and wants.? Why? Because your clients are unique.? They have unique reasons for seeking your help, and it?s not always for weight loss or strength gain.? Therefore you can?t take a generic approach to marketing to them.?

If you want to stop wasting time and money on gimmicks to find customers, you have to stand out. ?To stand out, start by choosing a great target market and position your brand to be a preferred option in that market. ??

How to Choose A Target Market for Your Fitness Business

1. Write: Why did I become a fitness professional?

A good starting point is to think about the reasons why you became a fitness professional. Was it to leave the sedentary environment of corporate America? Did a personal trainer change your life? Are you trying to combat the obesity epidemic one person at a time?? Write down as few or as many of the reasons why you got started.?

2. Write: Who do I want to help?

Is there a specific segment of the population that you just love to work with?? It could be the elderly, youth, athletes, celebrities, firefighters, teachers, or CEOs.? Write a list of attributes that you have in common with these groups.? If you?re a former corporate executive-turned-personal trainer, you can relate to the challenges of long work hours, hitting sales forecasts, and spending weeks of your life in airports.? Think about all of the corporate executives who could benefit from your services.

3. Write: What are my unique attributes?

What is unique about you? ?Your hometown, college, sports that you play, your professional associations, gender, etc.? Write down a list of everything that is unique to you.

4.?Narrow your target markets

Now that you know who you want to help, why you want to help them, what commonalities you have, and what attributes you offer, you can start to identify possible target audiences and consumer groups to market to. ?

For example, let?s say that you?re a former college athlete who is now a personal trainer.?Well, you probably know a thing or two about the physical and mental preparation that it takes to play competitive sports at a high level.? Aspiring college athletes and their parents could be a target market for you.?

5. Narrow your target markets even more (become the specialty store) ?

By continuing to narrow your target markets, you will become more specific in who you serve. ?Generally, as you become more specific in who you target, you begin to have fewer competitors. ?This allows you to position your company and brand as one of the preferred options in your target market. ?Think specialty store, instead of general department store. You could buy yoga pants from Wal-Mart and get a couple of selections, or go to LuLulemon and know that all of your yoga needs will be covered. ? ? ?

Let?s take our first example a step further to narrow our market:?

Let?s say you are a former Division I women?s soccer player who is now a personal trainer living in Denver, Colorado.?Instead of training any aspiring athlete, you might have more success marketing to adolescent girls who want to play collegiate soccer, and their parents.? You might also find a target market in former female college soccer players who are looking for a personal trainer in your area.

5. Do your research?

Once you narrow your target markets, do everything you can to understand the competitive landscape and needs and of your audience.? If you?ve chosen a market that you already have extensive knowledge about, the research process should be easier.? From research you can determine if there is a demand for your services and if your target markets are willing to purchase your products or services.? If you have competitors, find out if they are meeting all of the needs of your market and how they differentiate and promote themselves. ??

Your research should include a search that determines where to find your ideal customers. ?Since your business is unique, don?t take a shotgun approach to marketing (marketing to the any and everyone).? Just because a competitor joins the local Chamber of Commerce or is on Twitter, doesn?t mean that YOUR customers can be found there. ?Research your target market thoroughly and determine the type of media your target market frequently pays attention to and build a presence there.?

6. Get in front of your ideal customers

Let?s narrow your markets even more to find ideal customers, using our soccer example:

Let?s say that you are a mother?who played Division I soccer at James Madison University.? You?re currently a personal trainer in Denver, Colorado who offers sports-specific training. ?Your primary target markets are girls ages 15-21 who are aspiring to play competitive soccer, and their parents.?

To maximize your exposure to your target market, you might seek out soccer-specific clubs and organizations, form strategic partnerships with soccer camps and clinics, or join the board of a local youth soccer league.?

You could also find a solid niche in your city?s college alumni chapter to satisfy your secondary target markets (anyone else who could use your training services).? This group may include former college athletes who need a trainer, parents who are interested in losing weight, mothers in search of a strength training program, business professionals interested in corporate fitness and wellness programs, or other individuals who simply prefer to train with a fellow JMU graduate.

So there it is, laid out in front of you.? Some initial steps to help you choose a target market.? Just as identifying a client?s challenges and prescribing the right training program will lead to better results for them, identifying the right target market and choosing the correct approaches to marketing will lead to better results for your business.? ?

It might mean spending a few hours up front in the planning process, but this approach will be more profitable to growing your fitness business down the road.?

Health sites too complex, full of cliches: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The importance of health literacy hit home for Lisa Gualtieri when a Cambodian refugee diagnosed with cancer asked her to act as a patient advocate.

She played the role of a "salty tongue," a Cambodian expression that paints outspokenness in a positive light. But even though the patient's family was in the room when doctors took the time to answer every last question about test results and treatment options, the refugee's family would call Gualtieri hours later to review what doctors had said.

A new study, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, suggests one potential reason for the family's confusion: Despite good intentions, many experts may be creating educational materials that are too difficult for patients and their families to grasp.

"Patients will often come to the office, and one of the first things they say to you, especially about technical information, they'll say that they've been on the Internet, and they'll quote one or two key phrases back to you," said study author Dr. Charles Prestigiacomo. "Unfortunately, the little soundbites, while accurate, may not be complete."

Prestigiacomo and his colleagues at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark used a number of readability scales - including "simple measure of gobbledygook (SMOG) grading" - to test how challenging materials by 16 different medical specialty societies were to read.

The average reading level of the online materials by groups ranging from the American Society of Anesthesiologists to the American Psychiatric Association, fell anywhere from ninth grade to the sophomore year of college. (See one example here: http://bit.ly/10ItXRX.)

That's far above the fourth-to-sixth grade level recommended by the American Medical Association and by a number of U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services.

Those guidelines are based on the fact that the average American writes at 7th or 8th grade level, said Nitin Agarwal, a medical student at UMDNJ and another author of the study.

"We might not be cognizant of the population reading our articles, who might need something more simple," Agarwal told Reuters Health.

The current study's findings agree with those of previous work by some of the same researchers looking at patient education materials in individual specialties.

"Organizations often end up using jargon," said Gualtieri, who studies health communication at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, but was not involved in the new research. They end up "using the language they're accustomed to as opposed to (the language) the people they're trying to reach are accustomed to using," she told Reuters Health.

"You have to think about reaching people where they are," she added.

Sometimes, according to Prestigiacomo, that means using analogies. "There are only so many ways you can describe an aneurysm," said the UMDNJ neurosurgeon, who tells patients such ballooning blood vessels are "like a blister on a tire."

"The problem is that it's not quite perfectly accurate," he said. "But sometimes we have to realize that simplifying it to an analogy may be the best way for patients to understand it."

DROWNING IN CLICHES

When it came to the quality of the writing, obstetrics and gynecology really failed to deliver. Materials in that specialty had nearly six cliches for every 50 pages, and also "contained the highest total number of indefinite article mismatches (the improper use of "a" or "an")."

"You go from region to region in the U.S., people aren't familiar with what each cliche refers to," said Agarwal.

And in a sentence that might have unintentionally demonstrated the authors' point, they report, "The proportion of passive voice sentences used throughout resources ranged from 4% in family medicine to 27% in neurological surgery."

"Concise and to the point is the way to go for this sort of stuff," Agarwal said. Gualtieri recommended that those who produce such materials consider why people are coming to their sites, and what they're looking for. She echoed the authors' suggestion that such sites use pictures and videos.

"The organizations represented should be happy that people are at their sites," Gualtieri said. "It's high-quality, reliable information, there's a lot out there that isn't. If one of these organizations could read something like this, and say, ?we're not doing everything we can for those who most read us,' that would be a lovely outcome from a study like this."

That's already happened. Prestigiacomo showed the results to one of the specialty groups whose patient materials were analyzed before publishing the paper, and the organization committed to rewriting them.

North Korea fires sixth missile in three days

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired two short-range missiles on Monday, making six launches in three days, and it condemned South Korea for criticizing what it said were its legitimate military drills.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said North Korea had fired one missile on Monday morning and a second one in the afternoon. Both were fired into the sea off North Korea's east coast, a ministry official said.

The launches come hard on the heels of more than two months of threats from North Korea that it would wage a nuclear war against South Korea and the United States if it were attacked.

The North condemned joint U.S. and South Korean military exercises, that ended in late April, as a rehearsal for an attack on its territory.

"We are conducting intense military exercises to strengthen our defense capacity," North Korea's KCNA news agency quoted the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea, the body that handles inter-Korean issues, as saying on Monday.

"Our military is conducting these exercises in order to cope with the mounting war measures from the U.S. and South Korea, which is the legitimate right of any sovereign country."

North Korea frequently fires short-range missiles, although the current spate of launches has drawn criticism from South Korea and the United States after the recent threats from the North.

Seoul on Monday condemned the launches for stoking tension in the region while Beijing, the North's sole major ally, called for restraint.

"These launches are its tactic of signaling to the world that the regime is willing to negotiate now, while at the same time saving face," Kim Yeon-su, a professor at Korea National Defense University in Seoul, which is part of the Defense Ministry, said of North Korea.

Kim said that North Korea had an arsenal of hundreds of short- and medium-range missiles.

There appears to be little prospect of talks between North Korea and the United States as Washington insists that Pyongyang needs to abandon its nuclear weapons program, something the isolated and impoverished state has said it will not do.

Obama to speak on legality of drone program

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will discuss the legality of his administration's secret drone program and other counterterrorism practices during a speech Thursday, a White House official said.

Obama's speech will be an attempt to fulfill his State of the Union pledge to be more "transparent" with the public about the controversial drone program that has become the centerpiece of the White House's efforts to combat terrorism.

The official said Obama would also use Thursday's address at the National Defense University to discuss efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center. The president had vowed to renew those efforts despite being thwarted in his attempts to close the prison during his first term.

Obama had been ready to deliver the speech earlier this month, the official said, but it was delayed amid a series of distracting events. Among them: hunger strikes at Guantanamo and the Justice Department's subpoena of phone records from journalists at The Associated Press.

Civil liberties groups and an unusual coalition of Democratic and Republican lawmakers have criticized the White House for keeping most details of the drone program secret. Particularly concerning for these critics has been the administration's rare use of drones to kill American citizens overseas.

The administration is expected to increase its use of drones and other counterterrorism techniques as the war in Afghanistan winds to a close at the end of 2014 and the vast majority of U.S. troops return home.

The official was authorized to discuss the talk only on grounds of anonymity since Obama had yet to deliver it. Plans for the speech were first reported by The Washington Post.

Lisa Bonchek Adams: In Sickness and in Health: What Is It Like for a Mother to Read Her Daughter's Blogs About Stage IV Cancer?

My mother, Dr. Rita Bonchek, is a psychologist who specializes in grief and loss. A career discussing death and dying, however, was insufficient preparation for hearing the words, "Mom, I have metastatic breast cancer."

Mom and I have reacted very differently to the news of my stage IV cancer. I was online within days writing posts about the steps I was taking. I wrote immediately about how to help children in the days following a diagnosis like mine. As my readers know, I'm very open about this part of my life.

My mother, on the other hand, is much more private. She would never write a blog the way I do. She didn't want to share this news with people; she wasn't ready to talk about it. I respect her decision but that approach doesn't work for me. Sometimes our different ways of thinking lead to disagreements. Despite our differences we always support each other.

I thought it might be helpful for readers to hear what she has to say about reading my posts. Some of us with cancer choose to be very public with our daily lives but our parents are often forgotten in the discussion.

I am Lisa's proud mother and I have followed her blog from its first day. As her mother, I read her blog from a unique point of view, and I want to share my perspective with you.

Those of you who are reading this blog follow Lisa and her incredible writing. It is her understanding of human behavior, her expression of feelings of her heart and thoughts of her mind that make so many people want another blog from her as soon as the one being read is finished.

Yet, as the mother of this outstanding-in-all-aspects daughter, my reading of Lisa's blog posts is complicated because each piece contains an extra layer of heart-wrenching pain for me. Lisa's blog is a precious sharing of her everyday life, of medical explanation and analysis of each and every test result, of measured consideration of her hopes, fears, etc. Parents rarely get the opportunity to get "up close and personal" to this extent with a child. As Lisa's mother, knowing her innermost thoughts is a gift and a curse.

If you (or anyone else but Lisa) were writing about a life journey with a cancer diagnosis, I could handle reading about the physical assaults on your body and the emotional assaults on your psyche because I would be more objective and not involved in your everyday life. I could read your blog, feel empathy and sorrow for the diagnosis, but step away from it. However, I am enmeshed in Lisa's writing.

Lisa's father stopped having the blog posts sent directly to his e-mail because he was often caught unaware with heavy emotional subject matter arriving at inappropriate times. He now accesses the blog posts only when he feels emotionally prepared for whatever he may find.

While this would also be a very reasonable decision for me to make, I have the ambivalent feelings of wanting to be close and share every moment of what Lisa thinks and feels at that moment versus retreating from the declarations of how her life is now and her fears for the future for her and the family -- her family and my family.

Lisa and I share the personality trait of always wanting to know the truth so we are as well prepared for the worst as we can be. Lisa and I promised each other that we would never withhold any information to protect each other. The honesty Lisa promised me is the honesty she has promised to all of you, her readers.

On one level, her blog reveals to me everything I want to know, but on another level what I unconsciously don't want to know. This emotional see-saw of wanting to read it but not wanting to read it is a decision that I must make each time a new blog-post appears in my inbox.

Why is this "to know or not to know" decision so difficult for me? When I read Lisa's writings, I imagine the sub-text that she does not reveal: how she is managing to keep her family's lives as "normal" (whatever that means) as possible.

Lisa is, as most mothers are, the hub of her family's life. When Lisa writes in a blog-post that she was very tired and rested for hours, I know that her closed bedroom door makes every family member who sees that closed door go into overdrive with founded or unfounded concern and fear.

Lisa and I share the goals to make the most of each day and to cherish and to love one another. These are life affirmations within our control when so much of life is out of our control. Share our goals as you and I, Lisa's readers, benefit from Lisa's greatest gift to us: who she is and how she lives her life, in sickness and in health.

Phoenix police officer dies in fatal hit-and-run

PHOENIX (AP) ? A Phoenix police officer and firefighter both died Sunday after suffering critical injuries in separate accidents on the job, officials said.

Police said Officer Daryl Raetz, 29, was conducting a DUI stop on a vehicle in west Phoenix when another vehicle struck him at about 3:30 a.m. and then fled the scene. Raetz, an Iraq war veteran who became a Phoenix police officer six years ago, was taken to a hospital where he later died.

A day earlier, 23-year-old Phoenix Firefighter Bradley Harper was critically injured while fighting a mulch fire. The Arizona Republic cited Sgt. Tommy Thompson in reporting that Harper was moving equipment at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when he was pinned between two emergency vehicles. He died Sunday of his injuries.

Mayor Greg Stanton said Sunday would go down in history as a "tragic day" for Phoenix.

"It's incredibly important that this community show its full support, not only for the families of our deceased heroes so they understand how important the service (was) of these two men dedicated to the safety of the city," he said, "but it's also important that the living officers and the living firefighters see the community pull together so that they know that when they go out every day and risk their lives, they do so with the full support of the citizens of this city."

The hit-and-run collision that killed Raetz happened as he was standing in the roadway and was wrapping up the DUI stop. He is survived by a wife and young daughter.

Authorities said late Sunday afternoon that police in Surprise located the SUV that hit him and are working to identify the driver.

"When our officers are out there, part of the danger we face is just processing the scene," Thompson said, "particularly in a DUI scene such as this, and then (to) have another individual strike one of our officers who's out there doing his job."

Police Chief Daniel V. Garcia described the loss as "gut-wrenching."

"This is every officer's nightmare," he said. "I honestly don't have the words to describe the sorrow in my heart for Daryl Raetz and his family. He was one of Phoenix's finest, one of our heroes who was out there every day (serving) the community."

The police and fire unions planned to organize fundraisers for Raetz's and Harper's families, said Joe Clure, representative for the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association.

Bluetooth 4.0 support comes to the Nexus 4, might be headed to stock Android too

The five month old LG Nexus 4 just showed up on the Bluetooth SIG for a second inspection. The SIG's site appears to be down right now, but TechTastic took a screen grab which lists the revised handset as supporting Bluetooth 4.0. This is interesting, because up until now the Android Open Source Project hasn't supported the lower power Bluetooth spec, meaning that the original Nexus 4 couldn't use it despite having the necessary hardware. Judging by the appearance of this SIG listing, Bluetooth 4.0 support for stock Android could be announced at I/O later today. Coincidentally (or not), HTC is due to give to give a talk at a local Android User Group tomorrow about Bluetooth Low Energy. Oh, and while we're on the subject of a potentially updated Nexus 4, there have been more sightings of a white version in Dubai (shown above). Ripe for another I/O giveaway?

RNC chairman says Holder should resign

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the Republican National Committee says Attorney General Eric Holder should resign over the decision by the Justice Department to secretly obtain two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press.

RNC chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE'-bus) says Holder has "trampled on the First Amendment" by allowing the Justice Department to issue secret subpoenas to "spy" on The AP.

At the same time, the American Society of News Editors called the actions "outrageous" and "appalling."

The records obtained by the Justice Department for April and May 2012 listed calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters and AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn.

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Illinois Derby champion Departing played together as foals in the lush pastures of Claiborne Farm in central Kentucky.

It will be all business on Saturday, though, when the horses meet for the first time on the racetrack in the $1 million Preakness Stakes.

Orb is aiming for the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and a chance three weeks later at the Belmont Stakes to become the first horse to sweep the series since Affirmed in 1978.

Departing, it turns out, could be Orb's main obstacle as the leading "new shooter" in the Preakness.

"New shooters" are the fresh horses who bypass the Kentucky Derby and join the Triple Crown two weeks later at Pimlico. Departing, 4-0-1 in five starts, is the top newcomer.

"I think Departing is a pretty darn nice horse, and he's fresh; probably coming into the race the right way," said Shug McGaughey, Orb's trainer.

Preakness post positions will be drawn later Wednesday. Besides Orb and Departing, the probable lineup includes Goldencents, Govenor Charlie, Itsmyluckyday, Mylute and a trio from trainer D. Wayne Lukas: Oxbow, Will Take Charge and Titletown Five.

The fact that Orb and Departing have a prior connection adds spice to this showdown. The two rivals are homebreds, meaning the breeders retained the horses for racing instead of selling at auction.

The two ownership groups are of members of racing's aristocracy.

Cousins Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps and Stuart Janney III bred Orb. Ogden Phipps, Dinny's father, ran a racing empire that included nine champions, among them Buckpasser, Easy Goer and the undefeated filly Personal Ensign. Janney's parents owned the great filly Ruffian.

The Phipps Stable has about 100 horses, including 20 co-owned with Janney. The stable does not go to sales, like many owners today, to pick out their horses. Instead, they breed their own, and currently have 25 mares at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky.

That is where the Orb and Departing connection developed. Orb and Departing were foaled at Claiborne, a leading breeder for over 100 years that has been the birthplace of 10 Derby winners.

The two youngsters grew up in the same barn, and galloped through the same pastures. If history is a guide, Orb will eventually return to Claiborne as a stallion when his racing career concludes.

Departing, gelded when he failed to focus on his early training, will not join his childhood friend in that assignment.

Departing is latest in a long line of stakes winners for Claiborne, best known recently for Blame, the horse who pinned the first ? and only ? career defeat on champion mare Zenyatta in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Following a third place finish in the Louisiana Derby, the ownership team of Claiborne and Adele Dilschneider, along with trainer Al Stall, Jr., removed Departing from Kentucky Derby consideration.

"After that race we said, well, the Derby's just too tough and he's a gelding and we're looking for quite a bit of longevity out of him," Stall said. "We didn't even really consider it, to be quite honest with you."

Departing instead headed to Hawthorne Racecourse, rallying from ninth in the Illinois Derby to win by 3? lengths.

The Preakness became the next logical stop.

"After he ran such a good race, then we started considering the Preakness," Stall said. "So we just fell into that."

And into a showdown between the former playmates.

Orb has carved his name into racing history in the Derby. Stall hopes Departing does the same in the Preakness.

"A nice 3-year-old will raise his hand and say, you know, 'I want to get better and I'm going forward,' and he certainly gives us every indication that he's that type of horse," he said.

That could set the stage for a replay of 1988 when the Phipps' Seeking the Gold, trained by McGaughey, and Claiborne's Forty Niner squared off. Forty Niner edged Seeking the Gold by a nose in both the Haskell Invitational and the Travers.

"We went through it before with Seeking the Gold and Forty Niner, so it's not something that I'm altogether not used to," McGaughey said. "Departing is a very worthy participant in the Preakness, and just as we do, they've got every right to be there. I hope we both have some good racing luck."
