35 injured as tornado knocks over Ferris wheel at fairground in Spain

A TORNADO has swept through a fairground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said yesterday.

The tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to the website of its town hall.

It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt. Local media reported that the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Poles protest against prime minister

TENS of thousands of protesters marched through the Polish capital yesterday, the start of an opposition drive to capitalise on the spluttering economy with the aim of loosening prime minister Donald Tusk's grip on power.

Poland's economy has grown robustly even while its neighbours slipped into recession, handing Mr Tusk high levels of support and leaving his opponents struggling to gain credibility with voters.

However, economic growth is expected to slow to just above 2 per cent next year. That is healthy by the standards of most European countries but a jarring deceleration for Poles who have become used to two decades of uninterrupted growth.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the opposition Law and Justice Party, said ordinary Poles were no longer prepared to give Tusk's government, now in its second term, the benefit of the doubt.

Woman falls to death from cruise ship

The search for a British woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Mediterranean was called off yesterday after a body was recovered.

The passenger was reported missing on the Aurora as it sailed from the Spanish city of La Coruna to Barcelona yesterday, P&O Cruises said. The ship's crew were alerted and ordered an immediate search for the woman, who has not yet been named.

Bo Xilai loses legislature's protection

Chinese state media has said a local legislative committee has stripped disgraced politician Bo Xilai of his qualifications to serve on the national legislature.

The expulsion, once confirmed by the national body, will clear the way for Mr Bo to be prosecuted on charges ranging from corruption to abetting the cover-up of a murder by Mr Bo's wife of businessman Neil Heywood.

Delegates to the national legislature have immunity from prosecution unless there is special approval.

Ford workers sticker Paris Auto Show

Workers at a Ford factory in France protested at the Paris Auto Show with giant stickers, plastering about 20 cars around the hall to protest over lost jobs in the automotive industry.

About 400 workers, most from a factory in the south-western city of Blanquefort, joined the protest.

Repatriation for Guantanamo prisoner

The last western detainee held at Guantanamo Bay is being repatriated to Canada, an official has said.

Omar Khadr, 26, was 15 when he was captured in 2002 in Afghanistan and has spent a decade at the US naval base in Cuba.

The son of an alleged al-Qaeda financier, Khadr was convicted in 2010 of throwing a grenade that killed US army sergeant 1st Class Christopher Speer in Afghanistan in 2002, and was jailed for eight years.

John Norris, Khadr's Canadian lawyer, has said his client would be eligible for parole in the spring of 2013.

Aleppo souks burn as clashes continue

FIRES sparked by clashes between government troops and rebels raged through the medieval marketplace of Aleppo yesterday, destroying hundreds of shops lining the vaulted passageways where foods, fabrics, perfumes and spices have been sold for centuries, activists said.

Some described the overnight blaze as the worst blow yet to an historic district that helped make the heart of Syria's largest city and commercial hub a Unesco world-heritage site.

The souk, a labyrinth of narrow alleys lined with shops, was once a major tourist attraction, but has been the scene of near-daily firefights and shelling in recent weeks. Activists say regime troops and snipers have taken up positions in the citadel that dominates the city.

Amateur footage posted online showed flames raging through the stone passageways as rebels struggled to put out the blaze with a garden hose. Other videos showed a pall of smoke hanging over the city's skyline.

Once considered a bastion of support for Syrian president Bashar Assad's regime, Aleppo has in the last two months become the focus of the insurgency. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory, with a stronghold in the north near the Turkish border.

Since the rebel offensive began in August, each side has controlled about half of the city and has repeatedly tried -- but failed -- to capture the rest.

Apple Stops Calling Its Maps "The Most Powerful" [Apple Maps]

Apple Stops Calling Its Maps "The Most Powerful" Following Apple CEO Tim Cook's candid admission that Apple Maps might not be so great, and his suggestion that users turn to competing services, Apple has cleaned up one final detail: they aren't calling their maps the most powerful any more.

Previously, Apple's website suggested iOS 6 maps were not only the most beautiful, but also the most powerful maps out there saying "All of which may just make this app the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever." Granted, the statement was hedged a bit with that "may just" part, but apparently not enough because now they've removed the word "powerful" all together. The new description reads "All in a beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease."

After Cook's apology, and pointing users toward the likes of Bing and MapQuest in the app store, this last bit of language-changing definitely seems fitting. And accurate. [9to5Mac]

Depression was hidden until it was too late: Joseph I. Giarrusso III ...

Southeast Louisiana Hospital is set to close as part of Governor Bobby Jindal's cuts in health care. (Photo by Contributing Op-Ed columnist)

If my dad's death can teach us anything, it is the need for heightened sensitivity to mental health issues.

The recent media accounts of Joe Giarrusso Jr.'s life -- my dad -- suggested that he had it all. First, he was a retired attorney and magistrate who helped create a domestic violence section at Criminal Court. Second, he was related to former and current public officials. Third, he taught theology classes. Fourth, he had a wonderfully loving family.

There was no fairy tale ending, however. Dad died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sept. 12.

After reading the media accounts, many have asked, "What was wrong?" "Did he have a substance abuse problem?" No, though he had a few beers now and then. "Was he near financial ruin?" No, he blossomed in his new career as a mediator and provided for his family. "Maybe, there were marital problems?" No, Dad often said in his own colorful way that being married to him was the best 37 years of Mom's life.

He turned 60 in July and was diagnosed with diabetes a few months earlier. The former is an expected milestone and the latter is a regularly treated chronic medical condition. But neither one was immediately life threatening.

It is now self-evident that Dad was suffering from depression, a serious mental illness, the severity of which was lost on his family, friends and colleagues.

We do not profess to be mental health experts after two weeks, but we are trying to learn what we can about mental health issues. And the evidence is surprising and disturbing.

According to Kay Jamison's 2011 book "Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide," suicide was "the third leading cause of death in young people in the United States and the second for college students." Based on the National Institute of Mental Health's findings in 2007, suicide was the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States among adults ages 18-65.

Mental health issues affect the New Orleans metropolitan area. On July 13 -- which ironically was Dad's birthday --- The Times-Picayune reported on the state's cuts to Louisiana's Medicaid program. That article highlighted massive cuts to hospitals and clinics throughout Louisiana, including the closure of the inpatient mental health facility Southeast Louisiana Hospital in Mandeville. Closing Southeast Louisiana Hospital means the loss of 176 beds to treat patients with mental illness.

Mental illness is not a geographical problem. It is not a socioeconomic problem. It is not a racial problem. This is a problem affecting all of us. Put differently, this is not a "their" problem. It is an "our" problem.

If my dad's death can teach us anything, it is the need for heightened sensitivity to mental health issues. Mental illness and suicide are stigmatized largely because of a historical misunderstanding of these diseases and their processes. Two things have resulted from such misunderstanding.

First, mental health issues are often either discussed behind closed doors or swept under the rug entirely. Second, the failure to discuss these problems undermines awareness resulting in the delay of treatment. Awareness of mental health issues can only be achieved through greater education.

In turn, greater education should lead to increased public discourse and the understanding that mental illness must be addressed and combatted in the same way as cancer, Alzheimer's, or any other illness. We would not let family or friends delay or avoid treatment of those conditions. Why should mental illness be treated any differently?

As tragic as this is for my mom, our family and friends, my dad's passing is a teachable moment -- a moment to focus on increased awareness, education, dialogue and treatment. Let's not allow that moment to slip away. We won't.

Central African bishops condemn Congo violence, call for international

CWN - September 27, 2012

Citing grave human rights violations, the Central African Bishops Conference (ACEAC) has condemned the violence in the eastern portion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo associated with the rise of the March 23 Movement, a rebel group.

The bishops decried the ?killings, rapes, recruitment of children in the various armies, forced displacement of populations, inhospitable refugee camps, and anarchic exploitation of mineral resources? and called for ?an intervention of the international community in favor of the affected civil populations, to ensure their protection from the fighting.?

(AP) ? Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded international action to stop the war in Syria, telling a somber gathering of world leaders Tuesday that the 18-month conflict had become "a regional calamity with global ramifications."

In his state of the world speech at the opening of the U.N. General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting, Ban said he was sounding the alarm about widespread insecurity and injustice, inequality and intolerance in many countries.

Putting the spotlight on Syria, the U.N. chief said "the international community should not look the other way as violence spirals out of control."

Ban said the Syrian conflict is a serious and growing threat to international peace and security that requires attention from the deeply divided U.N. Security Council.

Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Syrian President Bashar Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, leaving the U.N.'s most powerful body paralyzed in what some diplomats say is the worst crisis since the U.S.-Soviet standoff during the Cold War.

The secretary-general also expressed profound concern at continuing violence in Afghanistan and Congo, increasing unrest across west Africa's Sahel region where al-Qaida has made inroads, and the "dangerous impasse" between Israelis and Palestinians that may close the door on the two-state solution.

The "shrill war talk" by Israel in recent weeks, in response to its belief that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, "has been alarming," Ban said, and Tehran's rhetoric threatening Israel's existence is unacceptable.

"Any such attacks would be devastating," he said, reminding the 193 U.N. member states of the need for peaceful solutions and respect for international law.

"Leaders have a responsibility to use their voices to lower tensions instead of raising the temperature and volatility of the moment," he said.

Alluding to the recently circulated amateur video made in the U.S. which attacks Islam and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad, Ban said that "in recent days we have seen hate speech and violent responses that perpetuate a cycle of blind violence."

He lamented that in the world today "too often, divisions are exploited for short-term political gain" and "too many people are ready to take small flames of difference and turn them into a bonfire."

The secretary-general said it's time for responsible political and community leaders and ordinary citizens to speak out.

"The moderate majority should not be a silent majority," Ban said. "It must empower itself, and say to bigots and extremists alike: 'you do not speak for us.'"

Spending alot of money for your directory submission can be a ...

Submitting your web site to the several online directories is an powerful part of any Link Popularity campaign. While your traffic from many directories may be negligible or irrelevant, appropriate incoming links to your website will help in your general search engine link popularity.

Look here Top URL Listing website and get free backlinks!!!!

Paying for your directory submission can be an extremely large waste of cash. You can get just as good a result from submitting to free directories. Personally, I wouldnt recommend you pay for what you can get free elsewhere.

The best directories to submit your site to are Search Engine Friendly directories (those that indeed have your site URL listed at some point, rather than outlinks that are simply code). Some will ask for a reciprocal link, some will not. One list of non-reciprocal directories is at http://add-a-url.info . Opinion at the moment is suggesting that non-reciprocal or one-way links are better, although any appropriate link is useful. Directories that do not encode outgoing links will help your websites Search Engine Ranking.

A web directory is similar an online phone whitepages. It contains listings of web sites arranged by category. While most web directories dont provide a lot of traffic it is still important to have your site listed in as many as possible. It helps build your web presence, assists with your sites page rank and link popularity.

Deep Linking can be worth linking to other pages on your site other than your main page. Before doing this, make sure that the directory you are submitting to permits you to both submit URLs other than your home page (some only allow top level submission), and for the same site to be submitted to different categories (not all directories permit what are essentially multiple submissions of the same website). This will work especially if you have online tools or directories (such as your links page) on your site that are useful and relevant to add to other directory categories. Choose the applicable directory category for your website. Most directories will have many categories you can submit your site to. Decide on the one that is most appropriate, preferably a keyword that you are aiming for high search engine ranking in, and try to submit to the same or similar category in every directory, at least for your main page. This will increase the ranking of your site relating to the keyword chosen. Look here Look here Add a website free

Submit to different categories as long as your website is compatible to those categories. This will increase the number of incoming links to your website. Writing the title for your website is very effective. Try to include a keyword you are aiming for ranking in the title, but make the use of it appropriate. Describe your website in a way that will attract visitors. The length of your description will vary from directory to directory, but most will be under 250 characters. Some will allow up to 1,000 characters, and in those cases write the most expansive description of your site and its features that you can. It is a good idea to write several descriptions of different lengths, say from under 50 characters for a brief overview, to around one hunderd and fifty characters for a fuller description, up to 250 characters for a yet more comprehensive listing, and finally a full description as previously mentioned for over 250 characters. Keep your listing pertinent to your website, insert keywords where applicable and appropriate, but do not just submit a keyword listing, as most directories will reject your submission. Save all your descriptions in a text file, and just copy & paste into the descriptions boxes when needed rather than typing the same descriptions out again and again.

Again, as with the description suggested above, the amount of keywords you can use will vary from directory to directory. Some will not give the option, some will allow you numbers of keywords, whilst others go by numbers of characters. Make a list of all appropriate keywords for your site, from most superior to least, and basically keep adding keywords until either you get to the bottom of your list (unlikely unless your list is really short) or you run out allowed characters/keywords. Check what keywords your competitors are going for if you need thought. This can often be done by viewing the source of a web page and checking the META tags. Again, save your keywords to a text file.

Make sure also folks add your URLs to all of these directory sites

Be Sure to Laugh & Play : National Association of Baby Boomer ...

By Judith Sherven, Ph.D.
NABBW?s Healthy Relationships Expert

Perhaps you?re in a long-term relationship and the joy is gone. You don?t want to be with anyone else but you wish it could be more fun, more exciting.

Do you miss when you were younger and felt more comfortable being silly and playful as a form of real romance? Did you get married and decide you had to act like ?grown-ups? and a lot of the fun went with it? Or have you always thought you needed to be serious in matters of love?

Maybe you?re single and you imagine, like Judith used to, that marriage was a very ?adult? experience and giggles and goofiness had to be left behind.

Well, open your imagination. And, if you?re currently in a relationship, dust off your sense of humor! It?s time to create more romance as you play together more and more and more!

Now, we don?t mean you have to blow bubbles, play hide and seek or skip hop-scotch. We?re talking about making more fun out of your ordinary, everyday life together.

You may be saying, ?No way, it?s kids to feed, bills to pay, laundry to do . . . there?s no time to play around.? Or maybe it?s,?Look, my life is dedicated to providingfor my family, when I get home I?m too tired to try to be funny and act silly.?

But you don?t have to go out of your wayto have a good time.

For instance, just yesterday we got into a lengthy disagreement about a grammar ?problem? in writing our next book. We even made a $5 bet. Then today we spoke with an editor we know and he sided with the positionthat Judith had taken.

Judith: After the call I left my office to go speak with Jim about what had happened. But as I rounded the corner into the hall there was Jim in mock groveling prostrative mea culpa.

Jim: We both laughed and laughed at how wonderfully playful and silly I was! And Judith will get $5 worth of ice cream!

Bringing more humor into your relationship may take new awareness and practice for awhile if you?re not in the habit of playing with one another.

Jim: That was the case for Judith in the beginning of our marriage. She was inclined to take everything seriously and hated being teased.

Judith: But with Jim?s encouragement, I realized it was often easier and more fun to deal with stuff, even some of our conflicts, through humor.

So, remember, if it isn?t life threatening ? a health or safety hazard ? or dangerous to the well-being of your relationship, it?s not thaaaaaat serious.

So, play around more, tease one another with love and affection, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

93% Farewell, My Queen

If you are expecting a French film chronicling the last days of Marie Antoinette, then you may be in for a slight disappointment. Brilliantly directed by the Benoit Jacquot (who also co-wrote the much less impressive script) and starring Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux, who plays one of the Queen's readers named Sidonie Laborde, and is also the protagonist of this film (for some reason) "Farewell, My Queen" is advertised as the story of the last days of Marie Antoinette, but it's more like the somewhat muted story of the two months before the "last days" of Marie Antoinette. So, even though "Farewell, My Queen" is a better movie than Sofia Coppola's ill advised, indie rock inspired, "Marie Antoinette", due to the faux-final-days story structure, in conjunction with the fact that "Farewell, My Queen" uses Marie Antoinette as a side character, telling the story from the point of view of Sidonie Laborde (a nobody) this is a film which may have many audiences scratching their heads as to why the need to show this particular moment in the life of Marie Antoinette. As I alluded to above, "Farewell My Queen" chronicles a miniscule portion in time during the last months of Marie Antoinette's reign. However, audiences are not treated to "the good part", or the part they undoubtedly came to see. What I mean by this is there are almost no visuals of the actual Revolution, plus (and more importantly) we don't actually get to witness the final days of Marie Antoinette's life simply because "Farewell, My Queen" curiously plays out through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. Instead, audiences are forced to sit through a pseudo-love story that focuses not on the very interesting end of Marie Antoinette's reign, but on the minutiae right before it! This film is the equivalent of sitting through the love story of Jack and Rose, with the movie ending just before the Titanic strikes the iceberg. Yes, I am aware that this is a script which was adapted from a critically acclaimed novel by Chantal Thomas, BUT it still doesn't make the story's focus any less misguided. I mean, there are some scenes which do attempt to create a somewhat intriguing love story, an aspect which must be fully accredited to some fantastic mood setting by Jacquot, but in the same vein, this film never rises above said simplistic love story. Side Note: Another issue many audiences will likely come across is how frivolously "Farewell, My Queen" throws its viewers right into the deep end of this story, with little exposition. In fact, the greatest individual flaw which hinders "Farewell, My Queen" will be seen in the audiences immediate realization that neither Jacquot's visuals or the engaging performances (which I will speak about later) are going to give those not formally versed in the players of the French Revolution and the fall of Versailles, the background information they may desperately desire, as this film half-introduces more and more characters of seeming importance. So, do yourself a favor, if you are going to see "Farewell, My Queen" (at the very least) peruse the Marie Antoinette Wiki page before going to see this film. With that said, the visuals (the set design in conjunction with the director) are somewhat breathtaking at times, due to Jacquot making some very brave directorial choices, including tons of long takes which trail behind characters as they weave in and out of crowds, giving audiences an intimate feeling of the atmosphere of late 1700's France, and a few beautifully constructed shots of the landscapes. And I guess it doesn't hurt that the two female leads, Seydoux and Kruger, both give engaging performances. But even if Kruger's interpretation of Antoinette is one of the best I've ever seen and Seydoux is so captivating to watch as she effortlessly takes control of the movie every time she is on screen, there is simply not enough in the story or the writing to give reasoning to the eccentric behavior or motives behind the actions of Marie Antoinette or (more importantly) give a reason as to why Sidonie is so infatuated with her. So, even though, in the latter half of the film (more than an hour in) Jacquot does create an atmosphere which allows these characters to somewhat blossom, many will find it hard to care about a Marie Antoinette story that contains no beheadings. Final Thought: Based on a "last days" plot which attempts to imitate a much better film like "Downfall", even with some spectacular direction and two engaging female performances, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than this year's "My Week With Marilyn", telling a story which focuses on characters nobody really cares about, rather than simply creating a storyline around the life/last days of (in this case) Marie Antoinette. So, even if you are a Marie Antoinette fan, with the overall structure the way it is, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than DVD worthy at best. Shots fired, 13 hurt during 'New Folsom' prison riot

Thirteen people were stabbed, shot or injured in a prison riot in Folsom, Calif., sparked by a dueling group of inmates. KCRA's Mike TeSelle reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

A prisoner was shot and wounded and 12 others were sent to the hospital with ?stab and slash wounds and head trauma? after a riot involving 60 inmates broke out Wednesday at a prison in Folsom, California, officials said.

Officers at California State Prison-Sacramento ? which houses mostly maximum-security inmates ? fired six bullets from a rifle during their efforts to stop the fighting, according to a statement on the prison?s website.

California's state prisons have been plagued by hunger strikes, occasional violence and overcrowding and remain at more than 50 percent above capacity, despite a massive shifting of low-level offenders to county jails that began last year, Reuters reported.

The effort to shift the prison population followed a U.S. Supreme Court directive to cut the state inmate population to 110,000 after the nation's top court ruled that overcrowding in the 33-prison system was causing "needless suffering and death."

'Blast dispersion rounds'
The prison statement said the riot began at 11:17 a.m. local time Wednesday (2:17 p.m. ET).

?Correctional peace officers used less-than-lethal force options including blast dispersion rounds to stop the riot. Officers also discharged six rounds from the Mini 14 rifle. One inmate suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to an area hospital for treatment,? the statement said.

?Another 12 inmates were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries including stab and slash wounds and head trauma. Four of the 12 were treated and returned to the prison. Several other inmates suffered minor injuries and were treated at the prison,? it added.

Four weapons that had been made by the inmates were found by officers, the statement said. No staff members were injured.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation sent a ?Deadly Force Investigation Team? to investigate the use of the rifle and a review board will also conduct a ?full and complete review of the incident,? the statement said.

Johnny Cash concert
The prison, which opened in 1986, houses 2,658 inmates, who are mostly maximum-security inmates serving long sentences and ?those who have proved to be management problems at other institutions,? it added.

Also known as "New Folsom," it is adjacent to Folsom State Prison, which is older and better known because of a famous concert there by singer Johnny Cash in 1968.

Thousands of California prisoners have taken part in waves of hunger strikes since last July, when inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison began protesting against isolation units. Those strikes rippled throughout the rest of the state prisons system.?

NBC station KCRA, which broadcast video of inmates sitting outside apparently with their hands tied, reported?that the prison was hit by?a riot in May 2011 that sent six inmates to outside hospitals. Two of those inmates were seriously hurt.

NBC News' Ian Johnston and Reuters contributed to this report.

C$ retreats as data weighs on global outlook

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar retreated against the U.S. currency on Thursday, touching its weakest level in nearly two weeks, after disappointing data from the United States, China and Europe underscored concerns about global economic growth.

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits held near two-month highs last week, suggesting some weakening in labor market conditions, while the manufacturing sector saw its weakest quarter in three years as foreign demand for U.S. goods continued to fade.

Overseas, the downturn in activity in the euro zone's service sector steepened this month at the fastest pace since July 2009.

"The weaker euro zone data has tempered risk appetite a little bit. As well, we saw weaker-than-expected U.S. jobless claims figures, which cast some doubt on the health of the U.S. recovery and the outlook for Canadian exports," said Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Meanwhile, manufacturing in China contracted for an 11th month in a row in September, according to a private sector survey of factory managers.

Analysts said selling of the Canadian dollar by traders looking to lock in recent gains was also a moderate factor.

Canada's dollar finished its North American session at C$0.9765 to the U.S. dollar, or $1.0241, weaker than Wednesday's finish of C$0.9745, or $1.0262. Earlier, the currency touched a low of C$0.9817, its weakest level since September 7.

"Most people are still looking at C$0.9850, which seems to be a nice technical level to play off on the rallies for now," said Darcy Browne, managing director, capital markets trading at CIBC.

The currency had been trading in a narrow range this week as markets digested the implications of monetary policy changes in the United States, Europe and Japan aimed at stimulating growth.

"We're really just an observer here, trying to make sense of it all," said Browne.

STRONG CANADIAN DOLLAR

Canada's dollar has been trading at stronger-than-expected levels, with some strategists attributing part of the currency's performance to the Bank of Canada's hawkish stance, which stands in marked contrast to other major central banks.

CIBC revised its official targets for the Canadian dollar on Thursday, forecasting the currency will touch C$0.96 in the fourth quarter before slipping back to parity with the U.S. dollar by the second quarter of 2013.

The bank had previously pegged the currency to weaken to C$1.02 in three months and trade around parity in six months, according to a Reuters poll published earlier this month.

Slower domestic growth, the likelihood international buying of Canadian securities will ease off and the risk a Chinese slowdown will hurt commodity prices could all contribute to Canadian dollar weakness, the bank said on Thursday.

Friday's inflation numbers are the only major piece of domestic economic data due out this week. The Bank of Canada's core annual inflation reading is expected to be 1.5 percent. The central bank targets an inflation rate of 2 percent target.

"That's comfortably below the Bank of Canada's overall inflation target ... It just simply buys the Bank of Canada time to remain on the sidelines as it assesses the uncertain global outlook," said BMO's Guatieri, who added the strong dollar was partly responsible for the low inflation rate.

Canadian government bond prices rose across the curve. The two-year bond climbed 2.5 Canadian cents to yield 1.146 percent, while the benchmark 10-year bond gained 25 Canadian cents, yielding 1.860 percent.

New Deutsche Bank leaders to flesh out strategy and cuts

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Deutsche Bank's new leaders will lay out plans to bolster its capital position and cut costs on Tuesday, as they battle to persuade investors that Germany's biggest lender can grow profit in the midst of a downturn in investment banking.

After 100 days in office, co-chief executives Anshu Jain and Juergen Fitschen will elaborate on which areas are to be hit by job cuts, how the bank's asset management business will be overhauled, how bonus policies will change, and whether to expect a capital increase.

Banks across Europe are taking an axe to costs and shedding assets to cope with a downturn in dealmaking in a faltering global economy and tougher regulations aimed at preventing a repeat of the 2007-8 financial markets crisis.

Having abandoned its target for a pretax return on equity (RoE) of at least 25 percent, Deutsche has yet to explain what kind of profits it sees for itself. In the second quarter, Deutsche's pretax return on equity was 6.8 percent.

The bank has already admitted its cost base is too high and announced 3 billion euros worth of cost savings, including 1,900 job cuts. But it hasn't yet given any guidance about potential restructuring charges, or how this impacts revenues.

"Key focus at (the) investor day will be capital and earnings power," analysts at Morgan Stanley said.

The group's capital position appears stretched relative to peers, with some analysts identifying a capital shortfall of $6.2 billion. But few expect Deutsche to unveil a capital hike.

Instead, the bank is tipped to detail ways of shrinking its balance sheet, since fewer risky assets means having to set aside less capital under Basel banking rules.

This means slashing another 43 billion euros worth of risky assets from Deutsche's balance sheet, analysts at Espirito Santo Investment Bank Research said.

The bank may also give guidance on possible litigation charges. Deutsche has said it has received various subpoenas and requests for information related to possible manipulation of the Libor benchmark international lending rates.

Repeated exposure to traumatic images may be harmful to health

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

Repeated exposure to violent images from the terrorist attacks of September 11 and the Iraq War led to an increase in physical and psychological ailments in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults, according to a new UC Irvine study.

The study sheds light on the lingering effects of "collective traumas" such as natural disasters, mass shootings and terrorist attacks. A steady diet of graphic media images may have long-lasting mental and physical health consequences, says study author Roxane Cohen Silver, UCI professor of psychology & social behavior, medicine and public health.

"I would not advocate restricting nor censoring war images for the psychological well-being of the public," Silver said. "Instead, I think it's important for people to be aware that there is no psychological benefit to repeated exposure to graphic images of horror."

People who watched more than four hours a day of 9/11 and Iraq War-related television coverage (in the weeks after the attacks and at the start of the war) reported both acute and post-traumatic stress symptoms over time. Those who watched more than four hours a day of 9/11-related coverage in the weeks after the attacks reported physician-diagnosed physical health ailments two to three years later.

Seeing two particular kinds of images in the early days of the Iraq War was associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms over time: soldiers engaged in battle and dead U.S. and Allied soldiers.

The study included assessments of participants' mental and physical health before the 9/11 attacks and information about their media exposure and acute stress responses immediately after the attacks and after the initiation of the Iraq War. Researchers conducted follow up assessments in the three years after 9/11.

The acute stress period refers to the first few weeks after the event and post-traumatic stress is any time after one month. Researchers started to measure stress nine to 14 days after 9/11 and within a few days after the start of the Iraq War.

Almost 12 percent of the 1,322 participants reported high levels of acute stress related to 9/11 and about 7 percent reported high levels of acute stress related to the Iraq War. After taking pre-9/11 mental health, demographic characteristics, and lifetime trauma exposure into account, people who watched four or more hours of 9/11-or Iraq War-related television were more likely to experience symptoms of acute stress.

"The results suggest that exposure to graphic media images may be an important mechanism through which the impact of collective trauma is dispersed widely," Silver says. "Our findings are both relevant and timely as vivid images reach larger audiences than ever before through YouTube, social media and smartphones."

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the study appears in a forthcoming issue of Psychological Science, the flag-ship journal of the Association for Psychological Science. It was co-authored by Alison Holman, assistant professor of nursing at UCI, Judith Pizarro Andersen of the University of Toronto, Mississauga, Michael Poulin of the University at Buffalo, Daniel McIntosh of the University of Denver and Virginia Gil-Rivas of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.

"When we consider that graphic images of individuals being overcome by the 2011 tsunami in Japan were shown repeatedly, that a vigorous debate occurred last year regarding the release of the gruesome death photos of Osama bin Laden, and that vivid and disturbing images of 9/11 will likely appear on our television screens marking the anniversary of the attacks, we believe that our paper has something important to say regarding the impact of repeated exposure to graphic traumatic images," Silver said.

Health Insurance Benefits That Serve Your Needs - ask me

Many people who enjoy the health insurance benefits through their employer might be wondering why it is still quite expensive when they see their doctor and pay the out of pocket expenses, especially with the health insurance premiums being what they are currently. As bad as this situation is, it is nothing compared to those who are living without any type of health insurance coverage or who are having to pay for a insurance policy from a private pay insurance company. Which do you think is the most expensive?

Most people don?t realize the huge overall expense that health insurance coverage is unless they have to find their own without the help of a employer sponsored policy. Many also don?t realize that this type of policy is not only subsidized by the employer and to make it a better deal, this health insurance plan is acquired at a discounted rate simple because of the number of people who will be serviced by the plan. Getting the same coverage on your own, can in fact be much more expensive.

The sad reality for individuals or head of households who have jobs without the luxury of health insurance benefits, will find that affordable health insurance is mostly just out of reach, unless of course you are very independently wealthy or at the other end of the financial spectrum; being poor enough to qualify for Medicaid. If this is your situation, you still have available options that do include temporary or catastrophic health insurance.

The above mentioned options will at least help you provide some protection for yourself and family while you seek out and secure a more permanent and affordable option. In the insurance arena, there are few comparable options that equal the employer based health insurance plans and there benefits. These plans are still the best bang for the buck and provide the best coverage available for most people needing health insurance.

Consider yourself to be a very blessed and lucky person if you are enjoying coverage by a employer based health insurance plan. The importance of understanding the value of these plans cannot be overlooked, especially when there are many families and individuals who are far from getting this type of coverage for themselves and their families. It is important that everyone have health insurance for the what if situations and if necessary you might want to contact your local Medicaid office to inquire about getting help if you qualify and while you continue to find employment that offers health insurance benefits to its employees.

The Perfect Internet Hosts ? Points That You Just Will Want To ...

A major dilemma for plenty of compact to medium sized organizations is choosing a reliable Internet website marketing or Online search engine Optimisation Business who?re capable to help you their using the net companies have great results and prosper. While in the very last five a long time or and so the range of new Web optimization suppliers has expand significant and we?re all getting bombarded each and every day by phone calls and email messages from these enterprises keen for our organisation and all declaring to become the most beneficial at the things they do, although the difficulty is, how will you know that happen to be wonderful organizations, that happen to be basically negative at the things they do and which merchants are only boiler rooms and also have no online marketing or online search engine optimisation capabilities are all?

A person must always be vigilant when using any 3rd get together particular or company to complete any kind of labor or job on your internet business or specialist, web marketing and online search engine optimisation is not any exception, take into account it, monies compensated to those sort of institutions are normally paid out of the month-to-month foundation and will operate to hundreds and a large number of lbs . for every 12 months and when the organization is not really accomplishing effects then you definitely are basically throwing your hard earned money absent.

The large difficulty I see with present-day Internet website marketing and Internet search engine Optimisation establishments is the fact that the sector is totally unregulated that means that certainly someone along with a machine, a phone and an e mail account can market on their own being an pro within this subject, a discipline in which you needn?t be an important part of any affiliated team or have any recognised skills in any respect and or class falling for 1 of such sleek speaking telesales operators or a tremendous in-dept e-mail about how magnificent their companies are can set you back dearly, and that i personally know of at a minimum a single individual who misplaced their corporation immediately following simply being taken in such as this, having difficulties to pay for for his or her Search engine optimisation even when their corporation unsuccessful but currently being stored to the hook by an unscrupulous salesman promising that job is simply being conducted and also to just give it one additional thirty day period also, the small business and revenue will start out pouring in, which naturally it rarely did.

What exactly can be carried out in order to avoid getting taken for any journey so to talk? Effectively the key matter you should do is be fairly, absolutely very careful. A hectic, competent online search engine optimisation or web marketing supplier who?s legit and awesome at the things they do would not must spam your mailbox 50 percent a dozen instances every day and when your contacted by phone, recall if its almost any great strain income, these types of as inquiring in your credit/debit card selection straight away to obtain their mind-blowing include that is on the market today only, just simply dangle up, since they are usually not to get trustworthy. When your hunting for a Search engine optimization never sit there and wait around to generally be contacted, question all around see who other enterprises use and no matter whether these firms are finding outcome, Lookup cyberspace all by yourself and when your around a considerable town lookup for the hometown business by seeking Search engine optimization Manchester, or Search engine optimization London such as due to the fact that when the agency is nearby you?ll spend a head over to to their places of work and find out on your own no matter whether they appear legit or not and when you will have a difficulty you are able to form it out in individual.

And try to remember, a really good Website positioning service provider needs to be very easy to talk with, converse basic English and give you the option to deliver specifics in their current achievements, demonstrating you serious good results for ?competitive keywords? therefore you must always speak to these corporations immediate they state to operate for to be sure.

An individual closing observe, everyone knows in regards to the most typical on line hoaxes and several of us giggle at poorly set alongside one another and terribly worded e-mail inquiring us for our banking content, or inquiring for an administration cost to assert the impressive lottery get for any lottery that we failed to even enter, nevertheless the greatest con in the intervening time is Web optimization. many regular people and internet marketing business drop to the rip-off just about every day and never ever understand it, no person linked to this market at any time will get prosecuted for getting countless numbers off a company and generating zero outcome, due to the fact at this minute in time these are not committing a criminal offense, I am hoping this variations, but within the meantime, be vigilant..

Make sure you learn Not So Big Business Enterprise Web Hosting to Maximize Profitability so you can get other information around the subject.

'Possession' is a low-rent take on 'The Exorcist'

Diyah Pera / Lionsgate

"Possession" is reportedly based on a true story about a spooky box that terrified its many owners.

By Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: We?ve had zombies, demons, vampires and ghosts. Why shouldn?t a dybbuk -- the Judaic version of the possessing spirit -- have a chance to finally shine again on the big screen? Representing a sort of equal opportunity religious variation on an all-too-familiar theme, "The Possession"?is a Jewish-themed "Exorcist"?that, if nothing else, should discourage the practice of buying antique wooden boxes at flea markets.

PHOTOS: The 10 least scary movies of all time

Such a box, carved with Hebrew inscriptions, causes no end of havoc in this low-rent horror film receiving a typical dog days, end of summer release. It comes into the possession of the Brenek family, or rather the splintered Brenek family, since father Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been separated from his ex-wife Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) for a year, causing predictable emotional difficulties for young daughters Hannah (Madison Davenport) and 10-year-old Em (Natasha Calis).

Em persuades her dad to buy her the ominous looking box, unaware that its previous owner, an elderly woman, has wound up immobilized in bed after being handled rather violently by the dybbuk inside it.

Said dybbuk soon finds a new host in the innocent young girl who, like?Linda Blair?s Regan, starts displaying violent, anti-social behavior. But while at first her symptoms prove hardly distinguishable from those of a typical troubled adolescent, an invasion of giant moths in her bedroom prove the need for drastic measures, or at least a good exterminator.

PHOTOS: Iconic horror movies

After a quick consultation with a professor, Clyde heads to Borough Park, Brooklyn, here depicted as so awash in Hasidim that it resembles a 19th?century Polish shtetl. There he enlists the aid of a rabbi?s son, Tzadok (played, in a canny bit of casting, by the Hasidic hip-hop/reggae star?Matisyahu).

After a medical procedure that reveals that dybukks are visible on MRIs, they get down to the inevitable business of a Jewish exorcism, performed in perhaps the most poorly securitized, empty hospital in North America.

Director?Ole Bornedal?("Nightwatch") indulges in the usual cheap scares induced by ear-shattering bursts of volume, frequently punctuating scenes with blackouts and ominous piano chords. But despite young thespian Calis? impressive ability for malevolent staring, her character is never all that frightening, with her possession often signaled by dark eye shadow that makes her look mainly like a young goth chick.

PHOTOS: Europe's horror fetish

The adult performers go through their properly anguished paces with professionalism, with Morgan displaying his usual relaxed charisma and Sedgwick displaying even more levels of anger than she did as the hard-boiled deputy police chief in "The Closer." But Matisyahu, while a likeable screen presence, seems to have been cast less for the quality of his acting than for his copious facial hair.

Much is made of the fact that the film is ?based on a true story,? with the press notes even including an excerpt from the original ad on Ebay attempting to sell the infamous box. But there surely must be easier ways to drum up the price.

Life & Home By Design: Holiday Design & Readiness - Blog

By Rachel W.

Remember last holiday season and the one room or project that you ran out of time to finish or install before the big event? Well, we are approaching that wall with everyday in September that passes by, especially if a custom order is involved!

This is one of the most challenging seasons for designers as clients invariably plan to entertain during the holidays and at times I have found myself installing, delivering or accessorizing right up to the day before the big event.

We are planners by nature and we are equipped with a long-term view of the steps that must take place along the way to completing a project, so allow me to help motivate you to plan a little better for this holiday season:

1. Begin with reasonable expectations for the time that you have to work with: I was contacted one year two weeks prior to Thanksgiving by someone who wanted custom drapery for a company Christmas party in early December!
2. Take the time and investment to put a long-term plan into place to avoid purchases that don?t complement the plan.
3. Keep your budget in mind as you work the plan, it is easier to get more accomplished during the front half of the year before the holiday spending begins as well avoiding the additional expense of ?rush? orders.
4. Custom upholstery and drapery orders should be placed by mid-September at the latest to insure delivery and installation before the holidays. With the Fall season comes holiday closures and a heavier demand for custom treatments which will affect turnaround.
5. Last of all, when it comes to the interior design of our homes remember we are in a constant state of evolution as we transition from one stage of life to another, place more focus on the foundational pieces and you?ll always have a pleasing, warm and inviting home!

Now, remember the one project that you ran out of time to complete last holiday? Today is the right time to pick that project up and finish it for the 2012 holiday season, you still have 2.5 months!
